So FI and I went to visit his parents today. I normally enjoy them very much. They are so great! Yesterday FMIL asks if I want to see her dress. As our wedding is a year away the thought never crossed my mind that it would be for our wedding. So I say sure, and she brings out a beautiful long, white gown. Again, I'm still not thinking wedding. I say, "Oh, that's so pretty J! What is it for?" When she replied that it was for our wedding. I tried to put on my supportive face, but my immediate reaction was a surprised Oh! followed by a stammered "beautiful." FFIL says, "I told you she wouldn't want you to wear white, J. She's the one that should be wearing white." FMIL turns to him and says, "I know but, I'm a grown up. She can't tell me what to wear."
First, I don't want to tell her what to wear at all. She is an adult, and she (and her attire) will be treated as such. But really? It isn't even off-white, ivory, or cream. It is a long, white dress with sparkles around the top. It would honestly make a beautiful wedding gown. Second, the way she addressed FFIL's comment sort of rubbed me a little wrong. I was referred to as though I wasn't there, and it made me think she knew that white isn't most people'e wedding attire of choice.
This is something totally out of left field for FMIL. It caught me completely off guard. I hope she changes her mind in a year. Sorry this is so long!
