  • I will NEVER understand the line of thinking that your engagement is important enough to celebrate with close family and friends.  Yet you tell these same people they are not worth enough to get to be able to bring their SOs.

It's a pretty crappy way to think.   Your lucky though, now that you are engaged and soon to be married your friends will not be able to treat you the way you are treating them.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

[QUOTE]For the wedding, we are for sure inviting all our friends and their plus ones, but for the engagement party because it's such an intimate setting, <strong><font color="#0000ff">is it imperative that we allow dates?

    Yes.
  • The wedding is in July 2014 and you have already selected the WP?
We've seen tons of posts on here where that has backfired on brides due to relationship changes.

If you haven't physically asked anyone to stand in the WP yet and have just made a list of whom you would like to ask, then there is another option to this e-party.  The WP could be eliminated completely and your mom could host a nice family-only party (with all SOs).  The expense would be less with fewer people.

  • Depends on the person's perspective really.  Rude?  Maybe.  But on the other hand, the SOs of the WP are not actually standing or have anything to do with the wedding except for being invited by default.  So if the budget is that tight, don't feel bad.

But to make a happy compromise between your mom and FI, just pay for the SOs of the WP.  Really.  How much food can an extra 6-10 people eat?

This is such a tiny blip on a long road to wedding planning.  Let it slide off your back and avoid stress and confusion.

  • SOs should be invited.  This is supposed to be enjoyable for them as well.  Extended family does not need to be invited though.  I recently attended a RD without my DH.  He wasn't able to attend due to scheduling.  I knew most of the attendees and can chat with anyone.  Overall it was fine.  It would been alot more fun if DH had been there.

  • All of the responses here sound really judgemental and I find that really upseting.  Your mom wants to do something sweet for you but has her limitations.  In this day and age, I think most of us should be a bit more understanding.

If I was invited to an engagement party without my fiance, would I be thrilled?  No.  But I would understand.  Let your mom do this for you and if people don't understand, then perhaps they shouldn't be in the wedding party.

    Just my opinion ....
