Oh, I hear you Courtney. Just by my estimates, Cinda will be $300-$400 more than Kim. This is going to be painful.

Lusher- I am also concerned about the deposit.  If she just up and left, what can we do??  I know nothing about lawsuits and what not... and I would assume that anything of that nature would cost more than the deposit itself.

LADIES ---Kim just emailed me with the following:"Unfortunately I have moved to Ky and I will not be able to make your cakes.  My mother was diagnosed with Cancer in June and I moved here quickly to take care of her.  Please accept my apologies and send me your address for the refund.  Thank you."

Well at least she finally said something about it. Hope her mom is ok. I sent out e-mails to Cinda and Ashley Cakes. And someone else I can't remember now. Guess we'll see! I'm thinking about the Cake Delicioso idea. It's students, so I like it in theory, but I dunno. Good luck gals!

Sorry, I keep butting in - Have you all considered a grocery store? Harris Teeter makes holy-awesome cakes. OR, maybe you can work with the baker - a co-worker of mine told me he and his wife really saved a ton of money on the cake by having a tiered cake with only ONE tier being real (for cutting in front of everyone) - the others were frosted styrofoam. There was a sheet cake in the back that was cut up for everyone, no one knew any better. Perhaps one of the really awesome bakers could do something like that for you? Just a few thoughts :)  I really cant believe your baker just up and left without saying anything. It's one thing if she had TOLD everyone, but this is just really strange.

Are you FREAKING kidding me??!?!? Real niiiiice... 8 weeks until the wedding and I have to find another cake baker and rearrange the budget.  You know, I can completely understand with a family member getting sick and having to move.  But you said that was back in JUNE and its now AUGUST!  And your clients had to contact YOU!!! Don't you think the minute she knew she was moving she would have sent out a mass email and let everyone know!  That is just plain rude and inconsiderate!  I am so upset right now.

I mean, I understand that our cakes aren't at the top of the priority list when she may have a dying mother, but it's a big deal to us, and all we needed was this message 2 months ago when she knew she was leaving.

Lusher- Exactly- sorry if I came across like I wasn't sypathetic of her sick mother, that is awful. But when you run your own business, you have obligations to your clients. And she had 4 or 5 kids and a husband, so obviously the decision could not have been made overnight and it has been 2 months.  Question:  She had enough time to update her website to Kentucky to keep her business going, but she didn't have enough time to send out a 2 sentence email to her NC brides.  That is what pisses me off.

Totally agree with you Courtney. We shouldn't have had to find out on her website. I didn't send a deposit or have her officially booked, but I haven't gotten an e-mail or anything yet either. We'll all find awesome people though! Good luck!

I'm so sorry this is happening to you ladies! One suggestion would be to mention this debacle when you contact other bakers to see if perhaps they can offer you a discount given your situation. I'm not saying they would have to give you the price that Kim was giving you, but they may be sympathetic to your situation and willing to help you out. Also, when you contact these bakers, one suggestion for reducing cost might be to have the layer of cake that you'll be cutting at the wedding an actual cake and the rest "dummy layers" made of foam. The rest of the cake could be sheet cakes that are cut and served in the kitchen. Our wedding cakes were from Cinda and our guest count was far less than we estimated when she constructed her design, so we opted to go with dummy layers for some of the cakes to keep the design the same. There is still some cost involved obviously, but less than if it was real cake.

Yep, Jenn that was exactly my suggestion, I think that'd be a GREAT idea for these girls to help cut back on costs :)

Thanks for all of your suggestions ladies!

Another idea, similar to the grocery store idea, Walmart actually makes completely awesome wedding cakes. My sister had one at her wedding and everyone was in love with it and we kept getting asked who made her cake. (People actually wanted a 2nd piece of cake!) And from what I remember they are under $200. Also, someone mentioned cupcakes, sam's club is an option for cupcakes. Again, their cakes are amazing and they do some pretty awesome designs. The only downside is they don't deliver. Cheryl PS. Hi, I'm Cheryl, I don't think I have posted here yet, but I am originally from Raleigh.

wow!! I saw this post with 49 posts and thought "this has GOT to be good"...stay strong girls...I think you're all handling it really well!...but I'm still sorry that this has happened to all of you!! I like the idea of getting a foam cake with one "real" layer and using cheaper sheet cakes to serve from. Just make sure you remember WHICH layers are foam...FI and I cut into our bottom foam layer during our cake cutting...we looked at each other puzzled as to why it was so hard to cut...haha...and then we had to switch to the middle layer and cut away from where the video and photog were b/c there was a flower in the way!! haha. Good luck!! :)

I was thinking about using the Cupcake Shoppe in Raleigh. Anyone know anything about them besides their cupcakes are to die for.  They do make wedding cakes as well.

Man, I feel really bad for you guys :(Definitely check out that link I posted before.  She seems reasonably priced!Another option is Whole Foods or Fresh Market.  They make really good cakes that could be a good alternative!

Another place to try for cakes is Nantuckett Grill Cafe in Durham, NC. They are reasonable, and their cakes are good!
