Dress sizing - ordering.. did I make a mistake?

Re: Dress sizing - ordering.. did I make a mistake?

  • Wedding gown shopping is crazy. The sizes are the "old" sizes from decades ago so they don't match what we're accustomed to.

Even then, though, when I got my gown for my first wedding, they told me to order a size 10 based on comparing my measurements to the chart. In street clothes, I wore a 0. After a lot of consideration, I opted to order a 6, which fit almost perfeclty -- had to be taken in a smidge, but a 4 probably would have been too small, and the 10 would have been huge.

The shop actually made me sign some sort of disclaimer that I was ordering the size 6 against their advice. I guess they didn't want to be accountable if it did end up too small.
  • I skimmed but didn't see this mentioned - sample dresses are usually stretched out, so while the sample 6 was only 3 inches too small, a real 6 would have been a few more inches too small; likewise, the 16 was probably stretched as well.
