So... Game of Thrones

Anyone watch it? Sorry, I was taking an exam all morning, so if we talked about it, it was buried in another thread, apparently.

And, uh, did you or did you not LOVE IT?!

  • I haven't watched it yet, but we have it set to download, so I'm running away from this thread RIGHT NOW.

    But it looks freakin awesome.

  • I haven't read the books, but I watched the premiere last night and thought it was really well done. The sets were amazing. The plot was kind of hard to keep up with, having never read the books. And the ending. WTFBBQOMG?! **SPOILER***  So some dude's banging his sister, and to top that off he knocks a kid off a tower because he saw them?

  • LC - yes, that's all in the book. ALL of that is in the book and then some. Daenerys, the blond girl living across the ocean? In the book she's like 13. Not even HBO would touch the child sex thing, so they've made her character a few years older.

It was fairly accurate, actually. The books are pretty complex. IIRC, the books are all written in the third person, but each chapter is from the perspective of a different character. So you might read a chapter that takes place at King's Landing focusing on one of the characters, then you'll get a chapter at the Ice Wall focusing on another. I think there are 5 or 6 POV characters in the first book and he adds 2 more for each book. Sometimes new characters, sometimes characters we've seen whose story developes further. So yes, they books are really good, but there are TONS of characters and plot lines. I've heard people who haven't read them say it was hard to keep everyone straight.

Oh, and not a spoiler, really, but a warning - the series is pretty judicious at killing off characters, so don't get too attached to anyone.

BUT I thought it was visually amazing, most of the characters (except most of the kids) looked like I had pictured them, and so did the sets/locations. I really can't wait for next week! H and I might have a party in a few weeks and invite people over to watch all the episodes up to that point.

It's a fantasy series written by George R. R. Martin. It's about a continent about the size of South America with a vaguely medieval society. Knights and lords and that sort of thing. A little bit of supernatural elements, though not as intense as Lord of the Rings. But a similar fan base. My husband got me into the books a few years ago and they were surprisingly good. I expected fantasy to be sort of one-dimensional.

Although the series started in 1996 and the fifth book (there are supposed to be 7) is JUST coming out this summer. Grr.

  • I have read all of the books, and I think that HBO did a good job with the opening!  I hope that the rest of the series is just as good.  HBO did age some of the characters up (in the book, Bran is 7), but I understand why they did it.  I can't wait until next week to see it continue!

I just hope that the 5th book is coming out this July....the release has been such a letdown, I have had it reserved for years now!

  • I really liked it. I spent like an hour trying to find somewhere to watch it online though. Stupid not having HBO.
  • H is a raging fan of the books and I had never heard of them.  When watching the premiere last night, I had to make him pinky swear to keep his mouth shut and not spoil it for me.

That said, we loved it.  H loved that it was true to the books (at least so far), and I loved it because it looks like it will be an awesome story.

  • I loved it! I was pissed we didn't get to see any naked men though (I'm talking about Jaime here, haha) I know all the boys were shirtless but there were so many boobs, they could have at least thrown in something for the ladies and dudes who like dudes. And I don't care that he was fuucking his sister. He's still hot. Yeah, I said it.

Yeah, I think they sort of needlessly aged Ned/Catelyn/Robert, but I guess since they made the kids older, it sort of made sense. It just meant that they were older than I pictured them in the books. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" />

Comps! It was my second and final comp. And thank you, I'm pretty sure things went well. Well, I know I passed the one I took today. I had 4 hours to write 2 essays (I had to pick 2 out of 3 questions which she took from a list of 10 questions I had prepared). One of the questions I highly suspected would be there since I had done a lot of research on it in the past. The other wasn't hard. And she told me last week she didn't have any concerns about me failing.

I took my first last week. My advisor is a perfectionist and I knew all 3 questions that would be on that one (I know I've mentioned that before), and when he looked over my essays he wanted me to improve on one. Well, on both the ones I showed him, but especially one. I added some historiography and rearranged it a bit, so I hope it's acceptable. I think they were pretty solid. I was able to include/remember everything I wanted.

    So hopefully that's over with!

  • I was all "What the FUUUCK am I watching?!" through most of it. But Sean Bean is LITERALLY my favourite person ever so I was like, this has got to be AWESOME so I'll give it 3-4 episodes...

Then I watched the behind the scenes after it... then I thought on it on and off today. And I've decided... it's messedrightthefuckup... but I LOVE IT.

Seriously, you should read the books. The amount of sex and violence was about accurate! Really good storylines, though. I can't wait for next week.

  • My FI read all the books in the course of about a month and since then, he's basically been obsessed.  He ordered HBO just so we could watch the premier last night.

I haven't read the books, so it was a little hard for me to keep up.  It was really helpful to be able to ask FI questions as things went on.  Even though I really knew nothing about it, I really enjoyed last night's episode.  I thought it set everything up really well and it seems like it's going to be a really compelling story.  I could stare at Jon Snow for hours, so that's a plus, too.
