Shower Invites

I'm giving my list to my MOH who is hosting my bridal shower. I have two invite questions.

  • Do I invite my future sister-in-law (fiance's brother's wife) who lives out of state and most likely will not fly out.?
  • Do I invite my two aunts who live out of state and most likely will not fly out? I am inviting all my aunts who live in state.
I want to include these people who are dear to me, but don't want them to think I'm rude or trying to say "send a gift please."

Re: Shower Invites

  • To add, all of the mentioned people will be flying out to my wedding (a month and a half later)

I think it really depends on the family.  My OOT aunts and friends were not invited, but my OOT grandmothers were.  I am super close to one of my aunts, but it's just not the way we do things.

On the flip side, I recently hosted a friend's baby shower and had to invite 11 OOT aunts and cousins due to family dynamics.  None of them could come - they didn't even bother to RSVP - but I was told that if they weren't invited there would be some major family drama.
  • I think it's probably proper etiquette to invite those you want to attend even if you know they won't come. Just like I'm inviting my OOT uncle with terminal lung cancer even though I'm pretty sure he won't attend...

  • I agree with PP's. Invite them if you would want them there.

  • If you want them to come (even though they can't), invite them. I would be more offended if I didn't get one, than if I did and was close to someone.

  • Since they are dear to you, I would say definitely invite them. They may not be able to come, but the gesture and knowing you wanted them there is nice.

  • My sister and I have 2 OOT aunts, an OOT cousin, and each have an OOT SIL. For both our showers, we invited the aunts and the cousin. Though we're not super close because we've grown up across the country from them, we still wanted them to know we wished they could be there. For each, the aunts sent a gift, but the cousin did not. In terms of the SILs, my sister's actually ended up coming. I didn't invite mine - I'd only met her 3 times when we got married and we're not close. I think it would be a nice gesture to invite yours. I just didn't really care.
