I've attended one and we gave them champagne splits in a nice basket. We figured they could toast their engagement and try a bunch of different champagnes to decide what they wanted to use for their wedding.

I can't drink wine (I'm allergic to sulfites) but my aunt did give FI and I a bottle of Patron, haha.

In general people give wine (or in my case liquor), cash or small gifts like picture frames.

In my crowd, we give registry gifts at an engagement party, typically crystal, china, silver or something along those lines. I didn't have an engagement party but still received those kinds of gifts once people heard we were engaged.

Check to see if the couple set up a registry.  We were advised to just in case and some people did get us items off of there which was nice.  Otherwise I think standard items would be champagne and/or champagle flutes or as others suggested perhaps nice picture frames or a vase or something like that.

My family all gave money- all my aunts and uncles gave 250 per family. My grandparents gave me more. My friends got me gifts off an early registry I started- loved getting the rabbit too! I got some Vera Wang toasting flutes that I was going to use for my rehearsal dinner (they've since broke). My mom gave me the Swarvoski Crystal flutes for our wedding that are sooo beautiful and I can't wait to use. Most of the Groom's side had never been to an engagement party and didn't bring gifts but a lot of them flew in- so that was more than enough of a gift.

We usually bring a bottle of nice champagne/sparking wine.
