Stupid resume question- kinda WR!

Ok, so at the top of my new resume it says Lindsey Newlastname.  Do I need to mention that I was Lindsey Oldlastname at certain jobs, in case they call to verify employment?  If so, where would that go on the resume?

  • You can put Lindsey Maiden Married if you want.  But, they'll probably ask you for your Maiden name on any applications, too.

  • Yeah, I guess it probably wouldn't be relevant until they're really interested in me- at which point I can just tell them.

  • I wouldn't put it QUITE like that, but for the most part, they won't bother with validating your references or doing a background check until they've at least had you fill out an application.

Either way, I wouldn't announce your recent marriage unless it seems appropriate in the context of a conversation.  I'd hate for them to mentally write you off b/c they're worried you might be out on maternity leave for a little while.

  • Mine has First Maiden Married on it. But that's my legal name too.

  • I would write Lindsay Lastname née Maiden
    like Wikipedia

  • Maybe I'll just make my whole resume look like a Wikipedia article.

  • maybe just make yourself a wikipedia article and tell people to go to wikipedia.org/kikibaby for your resooomey

  • I'd do Lindsey Oldname Newname at the top. It's not just about checking references. If I were interested in interviewing you, I'd google you to see what comes up. I don't know what field you're in or what level you're at so maybe it's ok if nothing comes up on a search, but at a certain level, I'd expect to see something and I assume there's nothing out there with just your new name.
  • Vally- that's a great idea!  Then everyone can edit at will to describe me and my work performance.  Um, on second thought...

ten- Nothing work-related about me is google-able but my phone number.  I'm a pretty entry-level type o' employee.

  • ha! so for one of your Skills you should totally put "Thinks things through thoroughly" which I, apparently, don't :)

    and hello alliteration!

  • i would put your name as it is now.  i wouldnt put your maiden as your middle name on the resume unless it really is your middle name.

they cannot ask you for maiden name on an application as that woudl indicate marital status, but they can ask "have you ever been known by any other name, if so, please state".

in a perfect world, its nice to give former employers and/or refefnces a heads up that you are looking for a new job, and then tehy can be ready if someoen calls to get a reference. so if they call for Lindsay Johnson and you were once Lindsay Smith, they'll figure it out.
  • Wait, your name is Lindsey and not Kiki?

That's funny.  Maybe just put first maiden married.  Although, I agree with Squirrly in that they will probably have you fill out an application prior to doing a thorough reference check.
  • Don't tell me your name isn't Penguin!  I'll be crushed ;)

  • Kiki, your first name is actually Kiki in my head, too, even though I've seen it before today.  SNs that are/could be first names just don't translate as merely an SN to me unless I think WAY TOO HARD about it.  Like katiewhompus - I think those are her pets' names and hers is something entirely different.  I think.  It gets really confusing in my head really fast if I worry about this stuff too much.  :D

And Squirrly is just Squirrly in my head. :)

I'm terrible when it comes to remembering real names vs. SNs. I try to connect with sig pics, but when they change or the person looks very different (e.g., LC's close-up with the big grin vs the one she has now), I get confused again. I'm slow.
