Any Knottie Dentists?

I'm having some huge problems with my dentist and was wondering if any of you ladies work in or have worked in dentists offices before and can give me some info!

Re: Any Knottie Dentists?

• I GO to the dentist 4 times a year, minimum, does that help?

oh lordy. hahaha. while i commend your dedication to your teeth, no, that will not help.

unless you have purchased a custom night guard from your dentist before and remember the cost. that would help with one of my questions!

Yeah I had a shit-ton of dental work done in 2008-2009 over about 12 months. Wisdom teeth, deep cleaning, whitening, cavity filling, and a dental implant, which was the most fun of all, followed by a crown and 3 veneers.

• also, if any of you knotties have any veneers and had to get any replaced, i'd like to know:

1) how long it lasted before it broke
2) how much you paid for a new one
3) what your dentist's warranty policy on veneers was

yeah. :) you can get cheap boil-and-fit ones at drugstores or get them custom made at your dentist's office. i am finding online that the average price for a custom bite guard is generally $400--$800.

Well, then my jerkoff old dentist tried to rip me off. But that's not surprising, seeing as he wanted me to get my "pre-cavity grooves" filled, and flat out told me that they would only do porcelain, and my insurance wouldn't cover it. And also that I should have all 4 of my wisdom teeth out RIGHT AWAY, even though only one *might* cause problems, and insurance doesn't cover unless they're impacted or infected. Right away, doc.
• My best friend is a dentist and she told me that veneers typically last around 6-8 years but they can last up to 10 if they're taken care of very well. If they last under 3-4 years the dentist will usually fix them free of charge, but it depends on if it's a problem with the veneer or a problem with how it was applied. If it's a problem with the veneer itself, then it gets referred to the manufacturer.

• I have a bite guard, I got it many years ago, 7(?) and it was about $400.

FYI when you have work done on your teeth it doesn't fit as well. I am too cheap to get a new one though.

Mine was in that range. I ended up buying one out of a catalogue for much less, and I loved it. I need to get a new one, though. It's 5+ years old at this point.

I have not had to have them replaced but....

1. I was told they are supposed to last at least 10-15 years. Can vary depending on your bite, whether you grind, etc. I am going on 11 years with 4 veneers now and they still are going strong, apparently. I have a couple friends who have had the same veneers for almost 20 years.

2. At the time I got them, they were about $900 per veneer though my dentist did 4 for price of 3. I have seen the prices for them here are still fairly similar to that still.

3. Not sure.

If yours is/are only a handful of years old though (i.e. less than five), and you have not been involved in an accident, etc that would change your bite or damage them, I sure would be complaining.

ok. my good friend is the office manager of a great cosmetic and general dentist office and they have the same policy. under 5 years, replacement is free. over 5 yrs, insurance pays part of it and patient pays $500.

mine lasted only a couple of weeks past 2 yrs and i was charged almost $800 for a new one last month. this is after i paid another dentist's office $70 to come in on a saturday and make a temp for me since my dentist who did the work would not come in. now they are telling me they want me to buy a bite guard for $1800 LMAO! my friend's office will charge me $590 for the same guard.

the cherry on the top is that dentist #1 has a lab in house and makes his own veneers and bite guards so it actually costs him very little to produce them while dentist #2 outsources to a lab and pays the upcharge for it. dentist #1 will only provide a limited warranty on my remaining veneers if i come back to him for my regular cleanings and buy this ridiculously priced night guard from him.
• That's crazy, Sarah. I'd definitely find a new dentist.

• I paid $90 with insurance for my night guard from my orthodontist (and it was definitely my 2nd in 5 years). Sorry if that's not a lot of help, but the prices you quoted seem to be pretty ridiculous.

oh i want to. but now i am worried that he did cheap work and that more will break and he will only honor their progressive warranty for the next 3 yrs if i buy the guard and come back to him for cleanings. i have 8 veneers...imagine how much that would cost to replace if the rest of them broke!

in addition, their offices treated me very poorly when i was in there 2 weeks ago. it was the worst customer service i have ever experienced. it was to the point where i was bawling for hours after i left because it was so bad. i want to continue going to my friend's offices. they are amazing dentists, very nice facilities, and were the ones who were nice enough to come in on a Sat and only charge me $70 to spend an hour and a half with me and make a temp to go on my tooth where my veneer came off. they had called me back (THREE of their dentists had called me back), done the work, and i was back at home for an hour before dentist #1's office responded to my emergency call to tell me they would not come in for me.

oh...the worst part? the first thing dentist #1's office tried to do was put my broken veneer back on. it was in two pieces and they wanted to put it back on. i called my friend and she answered and went and asked her dentists and they said they would NEVER put a broken veneer back on and that if it was repairable Dentist #2 would have done that to begin with instead of making a custom temp for me.

so now i feel screwed. i have 2 choices. go with horrible denstist #1 and continue to be screwed over but have a slight warranty on my teeth or continue to go to the dentists i love, buy the guard from them, and hope this was a fluke accident and that no more will break over the next 3 yrs. and if they do, i have to pay $1100 per tooth for new ones there. (i'm sure they could cut me a deal...they are awesome...but it would be more than the cost would be at dentist #1 with the progressive warranty.)

sorry for the novel.

Is this even legal? It doesn't sound like it is. I'd look in to that. I would think it's not okay to make honoring a warranty dependant upon spending an extra 2 grand in the office. I could see making it dependant upon returning for cleanings, because that gives them an opportunity to fix issues before they get to be huge issues, but I can't see requiring a customer to buy unrelated extras. Then again, I'm not a lawyer.

1) I got mine in 2002. Both of them broke after around 3 years, and my dentist replaced them both. I had them taken off in 2008 to get whiter ones, and one of those broke around Thanksgiving. I apparently like to slam my bottom teeth into the top one. It came off cleanly though, so they re-applied it.

2) When I got them in 2008, they were 775. The agreed insurance price was 610, and insurance paid for half.

3) I've known my dentist for a long time, so he always replaces or repairs for free. I'm not sure what he does for other patients.

The 2 dentists offices i have spoken to about this don't even penalize you for going somewhere else for your cleanings. At the most, you might have to pay their costfor the replacement if you don't go to them for the cleanings. They said they would never charge someone that much for a replacement after only 2 years because they stand by their work and expect it to last. My dentist didn't even ask me what I was doing when the tooth broke or anything, while the dentist who came in and made the temp asked me a million questions to try to diagnose it. I mean, i was eating a BAGEL when it cracked and came completely off. And then dentist #1 refused to look at any of the other 7 veneers while I was there to see if any of them were at risk of cracking while they were closed for 2 weeks over the holidays.

Dentist #1's warranty policy, of which I have a copy. doesn't even state that the cleanings have to be with them. Ugh. I hate this place.
• Honestly, I'd switch to the dentist you love without a second thought. Dentist #1 sounds like an ass. Also, it seems like Dentist #2 would look for small issues and take care of those before an entire veneer breaks, so there might be less chance of early problems.

Heck, #1 sounds so bad that I'd go so far as to budget if need be just to get myself to #2.

But then again, I hate the dentist - needing to have every single baby tooth pulled will do that to a girl.

• I'm a lurker, but I wanted to post since the bite guard prices you were quoted seem high.

I paid about $100 after insurance for my custom bite guard from the dentist. Mine was this cheap because they ran it through my regular insurance instead of the dental insurance.
