Name Change Question

Ok - this may be an odd question...go ahead and throw the stones if you must! :)

FI and I are planning on going on our honeymoon directly after the wedding.  I don't have a passport as of right now.  Someone at work suggested changing my name before the wedding so that I didn't have to re-order a passport and I know it takes a while to get this done.  Everything I look at for name changes says that I need a marriage license.  Has anyone heard or thought of doing this?  If so, is there a way to do it without a marriage license?

Just to be clear...we are in no way planning to do one of those secret weddings and not tell anyone till November. :)

Re: Name Change Question

  • Ugh, I actually renewed the passport before the wedding, so I should've had the "free within a year" benefit, but I thought it was within a year of the marriage which is coming up on March 28 & instead it's within a year of the issuance of the passport, which was in October.  Damnit.
  • Go on honeymoon, then come back and get your DL, SS card and passport. Our travel agent said if you change your passport afterwards but within the first year, it is free. If you wait and get caught up in life, you will have to re-apply and go thru the whole process again.
