Making some popcorn

So I just finished reading The Book Thief this afternoon (and sobbed, of course) and now I'm about to start watching Schindler's List. I'm not really sure what started this masochistic holocaust journey, but I can't stop.

At what point am I going to start crying like a baby? Amazingly, I have never seen Schindler's List before.

Re: Making some popcorn

  • I watched it the whole way through for the first time a couple of months ago. As depressing as it is, it's such a good movie.

  • I've never seen it either.  DH is always shocked at the number of key movies I've never seen.
  • Little girl with the red coat.  That's all I'll say.
  • KATE! I saw bits and pieces of the movie when I was about 13, and that's all I remembered (red coat girl) until I watched it recently. And then, after I had seen it, it was that much more memorable.

  • I only saw it a couple of years ago.  It is such a great movie.  Your heart will break.

As far as The Book Thief, I couldn't make past the first couple of chapters.  I will have to pick it back up.  I only hear good things about it.

I get the same thing from my H. I've never seen all of The Shawshank Redemption, which gets me some major side eye.

  • It is one of my favorite movies. It is a tear jerker.

I read about the holocaust a lot. I have a very deep sympathy for those people and for some reason I am very sensitive to this subject.

You should read Night if you are wanting a survivor's prospective.

  • Has anyone seen Boy in the Stripe Pants? We have it recorded but I am afraid it will be very sad.

I felt the same way about The Book Thief. It's a little slow in the beginning, but it's such a fantastic story. I feel like it's one of those books that just takes time to read and you can't try to get through it fast. It's a lazy day kind of book...not a lunch hour kind of book.

That is actually one of my favorite movies.  I've seen it a million times.  I should've evidentally squeezed in some  other movies instead.

I was also going to suggest Night if you haven't read it.
  • I get like that every couple of years. I go on a Holocaust kick for like a month. It drives FI crazy cause I talk about the stuff I read and watch the whole time and it is so depressing.

I did watch Schindler's List just a few months ago. I had only seen it when it when it first came out on video with my parents so it was a whole new experience to watch it now.

I LOOOVE Night. I got to meet Elie Wiesel at the holocaust museum when I was in High School, but I have yet to read his other books. Have you read them?

I haven't been able to psyche myself up for The Boy in the Striped Pajamas yet, but it's on my to-read list.

  • I've never see it, but I'm not sure if I can get excited for something I know is so horrible.

BUT we got our air popper in the mail the other day and I just bought kernels, so I am now tempted to pop some!

OMG you are so lucky. I did not know he had other books but I will be searching the library for them now.

He wrote over 50 books, but his most famous other than Night are called Dawn and Day and they follow where Night left off. Soo good.

  • Ricksang- I saw the Boy in the Striped Pajamas... it was a good movie, but the book was even better. It has a very surprising twist in the story that you don't get that often.

The Devil's Arithmetic is also a really good book and movie.

  • I will have to watch and read it then!

  • The Shawshank Redemption is one of those rare occurrences where the movie outshines the book.  You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the heads up on The Book Thief.
