Please recommend some wine

I like really fruity, light whites and reds. I don't like anything too dry. I had a rose' at a wedding a while back, and that was awesome. I really liked it.

I know *nothing* about wine, but I'd love to drink it more often. Right now, I buy a lot of wines that are $5-15, because those are the only ones I know. I'd like to buy something better, for dinner parties and so on (plus, I figure they probably taste better than the two-buck-chuck from Meijer).

What say you, E?

Re: Please recommend some wine

  • If you can find Apothic Red that is a nice red wine and not too expensive either.  A friend brought that over for a house party and it became a quick favorite.   They also just started producing Apothic White.

  • The only wine that I can legit remember having had multiple times is a Louis Martini cabernet. It's around $14 I think.

  • I like Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc... it's pretty fruity. I think it's like $12 or something, but I think it's really good. I tend to prefer Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand vs California.

Gewurtztraminers and reislings are light, fruity whites.  They tend to run $8-10 a bottle, I like Fetzer.  I absolutely love Moet's rose champagne, it's around $60/bottle.

Does your area have a wine bar?  We have one that has a special preservation system, so they have 50-80 bottles open at a time that can be purchased for a taste (1 oz), half glass, or full glass with a card that functions either as a debit or tab depending on how you've had them set it up.  That's where I go when I'm looking for a new wine, it's amazing.
  • I'm a big fan of rieslings.  There's a fair variety, some sweeter, some drier, but it's rare for me to come across one I actively dislike.  For our wedding, we really didn't want to go with the standard chardonnay and merlot, so we convinced the venue to let us bring in our own selections--they even waived the corkage fee!  Saved money and much tastier.

For the white, we went with a Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling; red was a Dona Paula Malbec--both got rave reviews from our guests!

My husband also loves gewurztraminer for white.

Something cheaper is Linen from T.J.s but I like the dry wines.

ETA: I did have some bomb dandelion wine though. I forget who makes it, but it is from MT and there is a bear on the label.

  • Dawn- I bought a bottle of Apothic Red not an hour ago to go with dinner tonight. Great minds think alike!

I'm mainly a red drinker. I'm big of cabs, syrahs, and (red) zinfandel. If you like white zin, try a red zin. I am not a fan of white  zin because I find it too sweet, but I really like red zindandels.

I also love red blends. My absolute favorie is Bogle (Bogel?) Phantom. It's probably 20-25 a bottle.

  • Quady Electra (I know World Market sells it and I've also been able to find it in bigger liquor stores).  It's sweet, fruity and not at all dry.  It also comes in both white and red, and both are delicious.

No, there's red zin that's a true red, not rose'. I don't know how similar it is to white zin...but I agree, I love Red Zins.

  • Oh!  Also, you should try a Moscato (if you haven't already).  Honestly, pretty much any brand, so you can pay as much or as little as you want. It's also sweet, not dry, fruity, and, depending on brand, a little bubbly.  Olive Garden also has a Roscato in the restaurant that's a red version, I just haven't been able to find it in stores.  Also yummy!

  • I love Moscato and just tried a red Moscato the other night (also sweet).  I love Lambrusco (a sweet red).  I also like sweeter Rieslings, like Cupcake, Barefoot, and Relax brands.  I also don't do dry wines.  But all of the ones I've listed are also between $5 to $15.

  • I agree that Moscato is probably a good thing to try!

Also Menage a Trois was something I liked a lot when I drank a sweeter wine.

In Ohio there is a winery that makes "Razzberry Riesling" that is great if you can get your hands on it!

  • Sweet. Thanks, everyone. I always thought good wine had to be $30/bottle or more, but I see a lot of those recommendations are $10-15. Yay! I'll be sure to make a list and start buying.

</div><div>I remember going to a HUGE, awesome liquor store with my Valentine date several years ago, but damned if I can remember the name. It was near the North/Clybourn Red Line stop. There was a Borders nearby. I think I'll check Google Maps (or just head over there later).</div><div>
</div><div>Edit: Oh wow. Google street view showed me Binny's. Guess I've been there. :)</div>
  • New Age makes a white wine that is delicious. It is a perfect summer wine.

My favorite reds are Malbecs and any kind of blend. I'm in a habit of buying whatever random red blend is on sale when I'm at the grocery store. I've only had one that was not so great. Usually they're on the fruity side.

Oh yeah, duh :-) I agree, I'm not quite sure how white and red zin are comparable.

Wrigley, my former boss is a wannabe sommelier. She would be the first to say you don't have to spend a ton of money on a bottle of wine. And she's the one who recommended Louis Martini, among other things I can never remember.

I love conundrum for a sweet white - I first had it on the beach with fish, and had a hard time finding it again for years.  I've now seen several liquor stores carrying it in my area, so I think it's becoming popular.  It's around $20/bottle

  • I like Moscato wine.  It is a sweet white wine.  If you are open to fruit wines (I've had blueberry, raspberry, strawberry, elderberry, sweet plum, etc.), they are pretty sweet and tasty.  Some people don't like them though.  Pinot Noir is a sweet red wine, and Bliss makes a pretty decent one.  Cupcake makes some pretty good, inexpensive wines too.

I can understand that. I've had cheap champagne and really expensive champagne. I always preferred the cheaper ones (possibly because the pricy ones always seemed really dry). I'm sure champagnes have differences like wines do, but yeah... give me a $6 bottle of Tosti any day. :)
