Quick question

Sorry guys, it's job search related--you're probably sick of me asking these.

When applying to a company via cover letter and resume, what's the best way to let them know there is more than one position I'd like to be considered for?  Should I send two separate cover letters and resume?

Re: Quick question

  • I would send two cover letters/resumes. And indicate in the first paragraph of your CL that you have also applied for XX position at the company.
  • ditto AC... I've had to do that once a long time ago and that's what the company's HR informed me.

  • Ok, that's what I figured but it just seemed so redundant.  Thanks ladies!
  • When I have done this, I just did one CV/resume for both positions. Why? Because the directions on the website had said to submit a cover letter and resume indicating the position(s) I was interested in, so I thought that meant 1 for both.

  • That makes sense GG.  This one doesn't specify, and I already sent one for the one position and then saw another I'd like to apply for, so I figured I'd better send two.

But now I run into the problem that my first cover letter is perfect for both jobs, and I don't know how much I can change it.  And I don't want to be the idiot that submits the same cover letter twice.  Gross.
  • I don't have any additional advice, but good luck my dear!

  • Thanks Beatles!   I hope you're having a better day today, grump ;)
  • JK, I hate cover letters with a passion.  But - I'd still tweak that one a bit.  You might even be able to call out that your previous cover letter sounded so perfect for this position that it inspired you to apply for both.

  • Haha, thanks. Part of the grumpiness was due to job search stuff, so I'll join you in that boat. We'll have a picnic.

  • Squirrly, I was able to edit it enough so it didn't sound like I was completely repeating myself.  They can't possibly expect it to be totally different, I hope--the positions are rather similar so it would make sense for the cover letters to be, at least that makes sense to me.  Thanks!

Beatles, I'm sorry to hear that.  I feel your pain, a picnic sounds lovely!  I have hot chocolate and peppermint Schnapps ;)
  • Sweet! I've got homemade pizzas. Let's do dis.

  • Oh, yeah, I think you're thinking of the more rural areas.  I assure you that people in Rochester aren't very nice.  Mostly because they're all SUPER IMPORTANT doctors, nurses, and other Mayo clinic employees and cannot be bothered with insignificants.

Then again, it wouldn't surprise me if your people were even less nice, and I don't like rude people much.
  • Yum, those drinks sound yummy LilG. I will file this plan under "things to do soon."

Nice chatting ladies, I'm off to go shopping! Hopefully when I come back FFF isn't at 25 pages.

  • Oh boo to rude people J&K. Maybe that jaw-cracking IRL isn't such a bad idea. ;)

  • Have fun shopping Beatles!

LilG, I hate the assholes in SUVs and trucks in the winter too.  Sorry guys, the Stratus hates the snow and, FYI, 4WD does not mean you can stop any faster than anyone else....so yeah.  Good luck with that.  Probably why the majority of vehicles I see int he ditch during snow storms are trucks and SUVs.
  • Yes!  Have a good day :)
