What 3 things do you love

About where you live?

I often look at my city and see the things I hate.  Since I live here, there must be something good, right?

1.  I can see canola fields blooming from my office
2.  The river valley rocks
3.  It's a relatively safe city.

Re: What 3 things do you love

  • 1. The diversity and sheer amount of things to do and/or going on at ALL times.

    2. Toronto street meat smuggled into the Skydome for a ball game. 'Nuff said.

    3. Yorkville Shopping District. Aaaaah.
    image
  • 1.  The monuments, especially at night.  I never get tired of them.
    2.  The restaurants and diversity.  I like being able to have Indian, Ethiopian, and BBQ all at my fingertips.
    3.  Good public transportation/very walkable.  A lot of people hate the public transit but I really hate driving and paying for parking/gas.  I like walking so I prefer living in a place where it's doable.

    1.  I  am a 5 minute walk to a major casino and many bars downtown
    2.  I live in a high rise with an infinity balcony. I love being near the water.
    3.  I look out my windows and I'm looking into a different country. I'm so close to the other country that I can see cars across the river and sometimes people.

    1.  The barbecue.  I've never liked barbecue until I came to KC.  I can get fantastically cooked meat with delicious sauce in any number of places near my work/house.
    2.  The cost of living.  It's pretty cheap to live here, but we are still a pretty decent-sized major metro area.
    3.  There's a lot of Midwestern/Great Plains friendliness.  People are not at all pretentious and are very down-to-earth.

  • 1. It has that small town friendly feeling going on.  There are plenty of family owned stores and I love that!

    2. The Sandy River is so close and so much fun to float down :)

    3. The movie theater here is super cheap!  I'm talking 5 dollar night time tickets and a few dollars more for soda and popcorn or candy.  Ohh the perks of living in a small town!

    1) Forest Park
    2) Is close enough to both city things (theaters, museums, etc) and country things (wineries, pumpkin patches, apple orchards)
    3) My friends are here
  • 1.  Being 45 minutes to the mountains, 1 hour to banff.
    2.  It's big, but not ridiculous like TO or Montreal (or american metro areas).  Even in bad traffic it takes me 35 minutes to get to work downtown
    3.  The live local music scene.  It's awesome.  I tried finding good local talent in Edmonton, but was hard pressed.

I wish we had a good BBQ place.  Oddly, we live in Alberta and have great Ethiopian and Indian, but no good BBQ.

I'm really jealous of everyone else's list right now, and I'm thinking my city is kind of lame.  :)

    1.  Everything is new, like the roads, shopping centers, houses, etc.
    2.  Very safe
    3.  I don't have to leave the city to do anything.  We have sporting events, concerts, tons of shopping, restaurants, and small neighborhood parks.

  • 1. The history and pride of the city.  I walk by the Liberty Bell on the way to dinner or where the Constitution was signed to visit friends.  I also ate dinner at the same place George Washington and John Adams used to talk business!

    2. Um, the Phillies.  In fact, all the crazy sports hoopla.

    3. Location.  Philly is reasonably priced, but close enough to visit NY and DC for day trips.  It's also one hour to the "mountains" and one hour to the beach!
  • 1) The lakes are awesome. Super awesome
    2) The community is awesome and the people are so nice. Mostly.
    3) The cost of living is SUPER cheap.

Brie, why did I think you lived in Chicago? Have you ever lived in Chicago or did I get you confused with someone else?

  • I'd like to add to my list:

     - the amount and diversity of types in restaurants

     - the bar/club/music scenes

     - the lakeshore and everything to do there (ie: The Ex!)

Yep, I work pretty near there!  I have a love/hate relationship with the Plaza...it's awesome for shopping and eating, but soooo hard on the wallet/waistline.

I will add that we have awesome fountains.  There are giant fountains everywhere.

  • 1. All of the necessities of a big city with all of the hospitality of a small city
    2. That I'm close to 3 larger cities that I can always find something fun going on
    3. I love how pretty the city is. Especially since they restored downtown.

  • 1. I can drive 10 minutes in any direction and be somewhere rural.
    2. Really tall trees line most of the streets.
    3. If my car breaks down in the middle of the road, multiple strangers will stop and help me.

  • 1.  I actually really like the small town community.  I never thought I would say this either.  FTR, it's around 12-15,000 people so not off the map by any means.

    2.  Love living on/by the lake.  It's gorgous and makes my outdoor runs so much more enjoyable.

    3.  It's so close to many larger cities that a day shopping trip isn't hard to do.

I grew up in Chicago and we got married there.  I miss it terribly and we'll be moving back (probably) in a year or two.  DH has a temporary job here for a few years.

I actually don't mind it that much, I'm just especially homesick for my family and friends lately.  KC's a nice little place.

I don't think I've ever lived anywhere like this. If your car breaks down around here, god help you, get off the damn road because everyone else has somewhere thuper duper important to be and will mow you the hell down on their way.

    1. The FOOD. There is a great diversity of types of food and prices of food - $1 taco trucks all the way to some pretty high end places. And the Mexican and Asia cuisine is to die for.

    2. The diversity. I can go into some areas of Koreatown or Chinatown and it's like being in a different city. Or country. There are also so many neighborhood and they're so spread out that they aren't really similar to each other. Some are from the 19th century, some were built in the 20, some were built in the 50s, some are Victorian, some are Spanish style, etc.

    3. The ability to be outdoors, at all time. I complain about the heat, but the weather IS very consistent. And for such a huge urban area, there are lots of National Parks, National Forests, National "recreation areas," state parks and county parks. There's forest, mountains and beach. It isn't a typical city - there really is a lot of green space. Many people have their own yards or live in low-rise buildings. There are so many choices of things to do outdoors and you can basically plan on doing those things year-round. Hell, I went to Death Valley last July.

A lot of people don't like it here, though. Especially people who aren't here very long. It takes some exploring, because everything is spread out, and it's very different from most cities.

  • 1. It's only an hour from New Orleans
    2. It's home to an awesome college football team with a crazy loyal fanbase.
    3. It's pretty much a giant small town. Everybody is connected in some way, and if you need something, chances are you have a friend of a friend that can hook you up. But it's big enough to have semi cool stuff to do.

H wants to move to KC badly.  It will realistically happen in the next few years but we love it there.  I can understand being away from friends/family though.
  • 1.  I can see a 14,000 foot mountain from almost anywhere in town, including my office window.
    2.  Lots of open space and trails for outdoor activities, and great places to vacation within a few hours' drive.
    3.  Climate is nice - low humidity, manageable snowfall, great summers.

  • KC has pretty much everything we want in a permanent location here except for friends and family.  The weather isn't bad, cost of living/houses are cheap, easy to get around, lots to do, etc.  DH has some family here, but they're not really close, and a few guy friends, but that's it.  My family and friends in Chicago are all really close and involved...I miss that.

We're visiting in 2 weeks, though.  I can't wait!  (Actually, I'm flying there for, like, 3 hours tomorrow, but that doesn't really count.)
