Skiing?

I keep getting emails that the ski resorts are opening.  Whistler is getting a crapton of snow.  It makes me sad. . . I'm hoping FI plans a ski trip for my birthday, but with wedding plans (and expenditures) I'm not sure that will happen.  Any other ski-bunny-wannabes?  Any really awesome deals I should send to FI?

Re: Skiing?

  • Snowboarding is way more fun Laughing
  • I can't get into snowboarding or wakeboarding.  I like my feet separate on snow and water, apparently.  I can't even slalom on water.  I think it's the angle.  I have one bad knee & having to keep it always a little bit twisted hurts a LOT.

  • Oooo I can see how that would hurt. I've never tried skiing so I can't say that it's that bad. :)
  • The last time I went skiing the bottom of my coat got wrapped around the seat of the chairlift, and when I went to ski forward, it pulled me backwards and then turned to go back down the mountain, and I was actually hanging off the damn chairlift by my asss. The controller saw me, stopped the chairlift, and when it jerked to a stop it threw me to the snow on my face. The entire top of the mountain saw it happen, and when I got up and realized I was ok, I started laughing. You could hear the laughter start at the top and work its way down that freakin slope. I had to take off my skis and walk down the slope, where I immediately went to the lodge and drank for the rest of the day.

The best part is we were with a party bus, and when we all loaded back up he said, "You are never going to believe what I saw on that slope right there a while ago." My EX said, "Oh I'd believe it. I was beside her!"
  • I looove skiing.  FI and I actually found a really good coupon at a rest stop while traveling.  Check out places with a lot of brochures; normally resorts have some deals within them.
  • Bec you have a funny story for everything!  ha ha.

I've never been skiing but on the way to work this morning I was thinking of ways that I could convince Mr Stack it'd be fun for both of us to attempt it.
  • Yeah. . . years of playing volleyball.  I've been diving on that knee for about 16 years now and apparently pounding a bent joint into the floor and then getting up and sprinting on it is not such a good idea.  My old knee brace was so tight I couldn't bend low enough to buckle my own ski boots (I have rear entry boots).  I had to look like a wimpy little girl and ask for help.

And, moguls are NOT my friends either.

  • No good deals for you. But get a couple of runs in for me this winter. I think that with my "delicate condition" I'll probably just XC ski or snowshoe (if I can breathe at the altitude) when hang out with DHs family over the holidays in Colorado.

  • Stack, almost everything I attempt ends in an accident, and most of the time is horrendously embarrassing. My friends came up with a name for them. Becisms. They even call their own accidents or mishaps Becisms now!
  • Some of the Vermont mountains may be opening soon but that's pretty far from you and they are all wicked $$$.  But yay skiing!  We probably won't go too much this year because of the wedding too.  Frown

  • Bec that reminds me of the episode of Friends where Phoebe tried to make it a good thing when Monica's mom would say, "you pulled a Monica".

  • Skiing scares the bejeezus out of me.  Especiallly after the whole Natasha Richardson thing.

I would kind of like to go to a ski lodge, though, and wear cute sweaters and drink hot chocolate by a fire.  Does that count?

  • Bec, we were on the lift (at Snowshoe) one night, well after dark.  The run under the lift makes a big S curve.  Guy comes through, makes the top half of the curve, and SITS DOWN on his skis.  Doesn't fall over, and can't stand up.  So, he's skiing along, now laying down, screaming, and NOT TURNING.  He crashed into a stand of pine trees.  Tree shook, ski patrol comes running (he wasn't far from the bottom), and everybody is pointing/laughing/freaking out.

Later that night, we get on the shuttle bus to go back to our cabin, and the guy next to us is COVERED in mud and pine needles and all.  Yup, same guy.  We asked if it hurt.  He said "It'll hurt like a biitch in the morning, but it's not bad right now.  Probably all the beer I had."

KUI is waaaayyy safer than SUI.

  • Vermont is close to the FILs.  We went to NH last year for New Year's and skiied Attatash.  ICY!  But it was nice.  Snowshoe is where we usually go - but it's still a 6 hr drive.

Brie, that totally counts.  But, skiing is not that scary.  You just need a good teacher.  I've taught a bunch of my friends.  They never crash - not REAL crashes, anyway.  I do.  But that's cause I ski WAY fast on crazy runs to see if I can.  Sometimes I can't.

  • I would probably like it, given that I love snow...but I am a gigantic wuss.

    Ice skating, though...bring. it. on.

Also I will reply to your e-mail this weekend--it's been crazy here lately!

  • Skiing/boarding in Colorado isn't that good yet.  Not until late December, and the really good stuff doesn't happen until the spring.   Most areas aren't even open until after TGIving, and even then it's limited.

  • I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to go skiing, but it's not in the budget this year. Nothing will compare to the skiing we did on our honeymoon last year in the Alps, but I wouldn't turn down the Rockies.
  • I used to ski in NY all the time, but since I moved to CA 6 years ago, I haven't. I'd love to go this year, and FI and I are going to try to go... I heard some ski resorts in Colorado have been open for over a month. My aunt lives in Salt Lake, which has good skiing... correction: My aunt and her (late) husband moved to Salt Lake specifically for the skiing.
