Destination Weddings.

How far in advance should we send out our invitations for our DW? How far in advance should we ask for replies? Our caterer is asking for a head count two weeks before.

Re: Destination Weddings.

  • We had a DW.  I sent out STDs about a year in advance.  Actual invitations I sent out at the standard 8 weeks out.  We did not have a huge guest list, so I knew most of who was coming before I even sent out the invitations.

  • Typically invitations are sent out 6-8 weeks in advance. I always think it's a good idea to send STD for a DW. I don't know if you've done that or not. If you have, then the 6-8 week window should be fine with an RSVP of 3 weeks prior. That way you have a week to catch up with any stragglers.

If you didn't send STD then I would consider sending them out 10 weeks out. I don't know what the exact etiquette is on that though. Someone else may.

  • We sent out STDs 9 months before and the invites about 10 weeks before. We had a long weekend before the weekend to get some things done. so the rsvp date was a month before the date. I was still calling people two weeks after the date to see if they were coming.

  • We sent STDs one year in advance.

Our invitations went out last week for our May 5th wedding.

Send STDs early.  Send invitations in the standard 6-8 time frame.
  • Ditto PP's.  Send STD's 9 months to 1 year before hand.  Send invites in the standard 6 - 8 week timeframe.
  • We're not having a "DW" specifically, but 95% of our guests will be flying to our wedding, so its similar. We sent out STD's 9 months in advance. We'll be sending invitess 10 weeks in advance and asking for replies 5 weeks in advance (the RSVP date is a little early but works best for us due to my work travel schedule, and we need a headcount estimate 30 days prior to the wedding).
  • 70% of our guests had to fly in to attend.  We sent STDs 7 months in advance (we were only engaged for 9 months, so earlier would have been almost impossible), international invitations were sent 10 weeks in advance, the domestic ones went out 8 weeks in advance.
  • We got engaged on 3/11. We are sending STDs out this week ::crossing fingers:: The invites will be sent out at the 8-10 week mark (first 2 weeks of August) with a response deadline around the 19th of September (just over 3 weeks). Our head count is due by 10/7, so the deadline gives me about 2 weeks to chase down slackers. Also, our room block expires on 9/14 (1 month before the wedding)
