Not completely etiquette related--but do y'all think the invitation color scheme should match the wedding's?

I voted yes because I would find it a little strange if the color scheme on the invitation is orange/black and then the overall scheme for the wedding is silver/white.

Now, if your color scheme is something like purple/silver and your invitations are purple/silver and have little black accents on them as well, that's a different story.
  • I'm also into the cohesive look.  If your invitations are just black and white, though, I think that's fine.  They don't HAVE to have the wedding colors; I just wouldn't do some random other colors.

They should be similar colors. If the blue of the wedding, for what ever reason, can't be matched by your printer, then another blue can be used. But don't send out orange and cream invites for a blue and gold wedding.
  • I think there should be some cohesiveness, too.

Also, the invitations usually sets the tone of the wedding and sometimes colors can do that in different ways.

  • The invitations were ecru with black engraving.

The bridesmaids wore cream, blue & green and the flowers were the same.

I, wore light blue as MOB but that was just a coincidence
  • Some cohesiveness is nice.
  • Should they match? Not necessarily. Is it nice if they do? Absolutely. All of our paper products were coordinated, and I really loved the cohesiveness throughout the entire wedding in that regard.

Traditionally, invitations were always white or ecru with black lettering.  Ours will be soft white with grey lettering and that's it.  If you're going to have color I think they should be coordinated, but you don't have to have blue invitations if you're having a blue wedding - you can always still have the traditional colors of white/ecru and black/grey/navy lettering.

<div>I said yes because my wedding is black and white, because those really are the colors that I like.  So, the invitations were also black and white.  However, I think some variation on the color is ok, as long as the wedding colors are in there somewhere.  For example I wouldn't go with pink and yellow invites to a black and white wedding.</div>

  • I'm a big fan of cohesiveness.  That said, our invites were white with grey print.  There was not a lick of grey in our wedding, but the black was too stark and it looked funny with purple or gold print, so we went with grey.

Maybe "should" isn't the right word.

People here often say that the look of the invitations suggest the type and formality of the event. The style of the invitation says a lot, but I take into account the color, too, even if that can be misleading.
