ipod reception

Is it okay to have one of these?

Re: ipod reception

  • I am having one!  A friend of mine is putting a playlist together....personally its so much better then having a DJ and doing all those cheesy things.......but that is my FI & I's opinion
  • Thanks! We're torn very torn between the ipod and DJ, and obviously money is a big factor.
  • I think that it is more common lately to have an ipod reception plus it saves on money!
  • I had one and it worked out well.  It was fun putting together the playlist.  I may have erased a couple of my DH song choices while he was in the other room one day to make room for a couple more of mine :)
  • I think it works for some and not for others.  Sometimes it will cost as much to buy the songs and put the playlists together plus rent sound equipment.  We had access to sound equipment so we just had to pay for some songs.

I think more of your guests will be likely to dance if a DJ is pulling them onto the dancefloor, but if you don't care about that, then it is not a consideration.  Also, you have to have someone to do announcements if you want to have the WP announced, the toast, cake cutting, first dance, etc.  It should be someone who knows what they are doing or it may come across and dull and boring.  Ours was a former DJ so he did a great job but he wanted to leave the reception before the cake was even cut.  So that was a little frustrating but we worked through it.

We did iPod and other than the announcements, it worked great for us.  I liked having control of the music and not having a cheesy DJ.

How did you guys handle different changes in the reception, like a switch from dinner to the first dance, or cake-cutting? Did you ask someone to announce such things for you?
    We're thinking about this too!

okay, you just answered this for me. We don't have a WP---and I doubt anyone would want to be the announcer.

  • Okay thanks julezlee
  • I havent gotten married yet...but the hotel has a sound system with an ipod hook up.  one of my girlfriends is putting the playlist together.  We arent going to announce the wedding party or anything like that, but we will walk in and she is going to announce us.  We will do a 1st dance right after that.  Our reception is more of a dinner party so people can get up and dance if they want to, but its nothing formal.  I agree with pp that an ipod vs. dj will only work for certain kinds of weddings.
  • I honestly think it depends on the type of wedding you're having.  I'm not sure I'd like it at a larger, more formal wedding, but would be fine with it at something a little bit smaller.

  • Ditto sucrets.  It depends on the level of formality of the wedding, IMO.  Just keep in mind that the person who's assigned ipod duty is performing a "job," and may not enjoy the wedding as much for that reason.  Someone was on here the other day complaining about being the MOH/ipod person at a friend's wedding.  She said the experience lead her to sign a DJ contract the following Monday.

I've never been to an ipod wedding, so I can't comment about how successful they are.  But I think that they could work really well if there won't be dancing.
  • I had one.  I have mixed feelings on it.  It was wonderful for the cocktails and dinner portion, but the dancing got kind of messed up.

My flaky sort of best friend insisted on doing the playlist as a wedding gift which she would also download her entire 2000 song music library on for me to keep.  She has great songs from every genre.

Well, she was in her room crying all morning because she did not have it organized, H's friend and my BIL had to put it together.  She did not have the dance part organized and people kept going up to the computer and changing the songs over and over and her and my super drunk SIL ended up fighting over it.

I was kind of oblivious to everything but have heard about it since, and we have a ton of dancers in our crowd and there was not tons of dancing.

She never even gave me the ipod that was my wedding gift, and I still spent $700 on the sound system.  A DJ would have been less stressful.

  • we're planning on having one. i just bought an ipod off ebay for $50 especially for the wedding since my ipod is one of the originals and harder for someone to navigate (not to mention i hope everyday it still works when i turn it on.)

my venue supplies all the sound equipment and says people do ipod receptions all the time

i plan to make a "cocktail" playlist, "dinner" playlist and an "after dinner" playlist. hopefully it works out.

the only thing i'm unsure of is the ceremony.

  • we had one, but we had a flowing reception w/o a dance floor, so it worked for us. the venue had a master of ceremonies who was able to make the announcements for us!

it works better for smaller, shorter weddings. if you want people to stay at your reception for more than 2.5 hrs or so, get a dj. if you are ok with a shorter reception (we were because we always think receptions drag on and on and on, anyway), then you will be fine!
