What would you do

**CN at the TOP for bbyckes**
I work on campus, and it's Spring Break. My boss didn't expect me to come in this week, but I said I would. Now I'm thinking of taking the rest of the week off because it sounds like she doesn't really need me. Would you keep working through the week or just let her know that you came in today to finish up on a project and then enjoy sleeping in like a normal college student? **

LONG VERSION FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO READ:
I'm a student worker on campus, and it's Spring Break this week. I said I would come in to work (they needed me to fill out my time-card last week if I wasn't), and now that I'm here, I don't feel like it's necessary. In fact, on Friday my boss asked if I was even planning on being here at all this week. I stupidly said yes because I think I need the money, but after doing the math I could easily spend this week cleaning out my room at my mom's house and sell the furniture on Craigslist for the same amount I'd be making here. (I basically make minimum wage, only here for experience as a graphic design student).

So my question is, when my boss comes in, should I just her that I came in to tie up some lose ends on a project and that if she didn't need me, that I would be out this week?

Another contributing factor to my laziness is that I live 35 minutes away, which isn't a big deal because normally I'm here until 7:30  every day so it seems worth it. But being here for 4 hours just doesn't seem worth it to me.

Re: What would you do

  • I'd just ask her if she minds if you take the rest of the week off.  I don't see the problem.  You sound like the type of person that wouldn't bail if you have deadlines or things to do.
  • If you are just going to be bored all week, I'd probably just not bother coming in.

  • I'd just ask her if she needs you to do anything specific, and if not, stay home the rest of the week. I'm sure she won't mind, since she didn't expect you to be in anyway.
  • It's spring break. I'd spend it doing spring break things---unless you plan on working in higher ed (or ed, for that matter), you won't be getting many spring breaks from here on out--and, if you aren't hurting for the money, I'd say enjoy the time off!

  • bahaha... She hasn't been back since then, and good riddance.
  • Yeah, if she needs me I'll definitely come in, but this IS my last spring break and even if I'm not going somewhere awesome, it would be great to get an extra hour of sleep every morning. :) Thanks for confirming that I'm not just being lazy!
  • This happened to me over Christmas Break. I was bored out of my mind!! So when they asked if I wanted to work over Spring Break, I told them no thanks!
  • Yeah, if there is ONE thing I could change about my college years, that's it.  I NEVER took a Spring Break.  If anything, I worked more since I didn't have class.  So, to anyone that still has the chance - take it!  They give you breaks for a reason!
  • I would take the rest of the week off.

  • I definitely would do other stuff. I remember being torn about working at college over long weekend and breaks, but now that I am well out of that I don't regret it one bit. They expect college kids to take advantage of their breaks I am sure. I still got great recs.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I would love to be able to get most of the DIY stuff for the wedding done this week, since this will be my last break before the wedding. Looks like I'm going to Michaels (the store, not your H's house...) after work today!

I would ask her. Not tell her.

EDIT: I didn't mean to quote that. I could've sworn I hit reply.

    Right, that's what I meant. :)
  • But yes, go for it. The worst your boss will do is say no, you know?
  • My last year of college, I worked straight through every single break.  I do regret it now, years later, because I don't have a choice of taking those breaks or not, I just have to do them, you know?

I'd ask her if you could take it off.  It sounds like she was already taking it for granted that you wouldn't be there, so I doubt she'll mind.
