PSA DC knotties/snow/vent

If you get your car stuck in the snow never ever leave it. Nevermind you might freeze to death before a cop comes by, and heavens knows that no one will help you, but do not leave. We just had to pay over $600 to get Scotts car back because it got stuck in the snow and he walked home to call a tow truck to come get it. And while waiting for said tow truck another came by and picked it up. $200 for "a vehicle abandoned on the side of the road" $200 more for a towing fee, and another $200 for being at the towing place "2 days" when it got towed at 8pm last night and we picked it up at 2pm today (aka...18 hours).

and the best part? Freezing rain forecast for Friday.

  • I'm sorry, maybe it's different up here because we're used to big snow storms, but isn't this common knowledge?  If you leave your vehicle in the road, especially on an off-ramp, it's going to get towed. It becomes a hazard to other vehicles on the road as well as snow plows.

  • Yeah, we've had times here where gas stations have tried to charge assanine amounts for a gallon of gas, and the governor's office has started prosecuting them.  Maybe call your office of consumer protection, or something similar.  It sounds to me like 1) they stole your car, 2) they overcharged for how long it was there.

  • Apparently all of the tow truck companies here were busy. They were saying on the radio "don't call for tow trucks, just leave your car" so not so much :( Even the police (he called after he got home) were like "was it pulled off the road? Ok you should be fine until tomorrow".

The one we called to come save him the first time got the truck stuck pulling out of his lot. Poor Virginia.
  • Wow, that really does suck. Surely if it was off the road, it wouldn't be a problem?
  • Um, katie?  I just looked at your bio for the first time.  Your H is a mighty fine looking man, especially in uniform.

  • Lol why thank you 3plus :)
  • They probably towed so quickly due to the amount of cars being stranded.  We drove through VA. . 'road the wave of the stupid storm' some might say. It took us 9 flippin hours to get from Raleigh NC to DC. . .we would pull off and get gas every time we hit half a tank of gas.

Anyways. . there were cars left and right off of the roads. They were probably considering all cars left as hazards due to the conditions.

With that said, I still think 600 is a bit much, especially under the circumstances. I would totally look into that and see what can be done to reduce it.

  • Katie, after you posted yesterday I saw on the news that in the DC area there were more then 500 cars stranded.  It made me think of you.  I thought wow her car will be fine because there is so many... I guess not.  Last year FI car got towed out of our parking lot because it was 2 inches of snow and we weren't home to move it.  They also charged us for 2 days even though it was sunday night to monday.  It still pisses me off when I think about it so I know how you are feeling.  Just remember atleast he got home safe...it was super annoying but could have been worse!

  • wow that is ludacris!!!! I would be soooo mad. plus with this economy, not everyone has 600 to cough up in one day. that blows... yeah It took me 2 hours to get home from DC and  I only live 15 mins away.
  • I had to spend most of the day digging my car out by myself because H slipped on the ice walking down the steps in front of our apartment and sprained his foot, knee and ankle.  Fortunately his brother lives closeby and was able to take H to the emergency room and help me dig out my car. My backis killing me now.

  • capitol, I had moved money out of our savings to pay for it :( Thank god for sil saving the day and "consider it an early Christmas present" when she took us to the lot.

a further psa...always call your insurance company :) USAA is going to refund us (and then sil through us) the price of the tow, plus contact the driver of the semi for damage to dh's car (he did hit and put a dent in it. Not a huge thing but still there)
