wtf on the internet

http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/personal/01/04/dating.site.overweight/index.html

Im curious who these people are and whether or not I can throw stuff at them in the near future. How awful.

Re: wtf on the internet

  • Why do they get to dictate who is and isn't beautiful. I know a lot of people who packed on pounds and are still beautiful.
  • Um.. yeah... That's just wrong.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I did a double-take to make sure that wasn't an article from The Onion.

  • Ew.  That makes me want to punch someone in the nuts.  Could those dudes look like bigger d-bags?

  • I would personally like to thank everyone who is a member of said site for publicly identifying themselves as a douchebag so that I do not have to find out about their douchbaggery through personal interaction. It's a public service, really.

    That's awesome
  • I like a nice looking man in a suit, but when he obviously tans, leaves his dress shirt unbuttoned ATLEAST three buttons and is so superficial as to have a prejudice against overweight people I have to wonder how much sense is hanging out in that brain space.
  • I don't necessarily fault them for kicking people who don't meet their standards off the site, because it's a membership site and they're allowed to have whatever standards they want.

I do, however, find them to be completely ridiculous on the whole, and their "standards" to be laughable and overall pretty useless in terms of finding a romantic partner with any hope of a real relationship.

So while I think it's fine if they want to kick out whoever they want to kick out to meet whatever standards of "beauty" they feel they need to uphold, the fact that they even exist at all is a joke.

  • TJ are you tuned into my brainwaves? Cause everytime I think "I wonder what Temerity Jane would say about this?' WHAM! There you are.
  • Honestly, the people on that site deserve each other.  If a woman met a man on there, she couldn't really be mad if he dumped her when she gained a few pounds (or lost her hair, or got some wrinkles, etc), or vice-versa.

  • Well thanks for ruining my day, I'm now officially not allowed to join the beautiful people club OR the 100K+ dating club.  Dang it, I can't catch a break.
  • I read an interesting blog post about this yesterday. A web site like this doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, and it's interesting that this can draw ire and public attention, when real/consequential ramifications of weight discrimination are ignored by the media: http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet/feature/2010/01/04/beautiful_people/index.html

  • Also, I tried to check out this site yesterday--morbid curiousity, I couldn't resist seeing what kinds of douchebags register for something like this...but it was overrun and the server kept crashing.
  • I'm not gonna get all altruistic and say that looks don't matter to me at all, because that's an outright lie. FI and I were strictly platonic friends for four years before we started dating. I debated with a couple friends of mine I tried to set him up with whether or not he was cute, I never could decide. Then, after we started dating, I found myself thinking that he's the most adorable thing on the planet. To me, looks go right along with personality. If you're a complete crotchpheasant azzhole all the time, then I probably don't find you that attractive. So the point is, I can't understand how people can with good conscience use this as a dating website. PP said something to the effect of "These people deserve eachother." They do. And when they're all old and not hot anymore, they're all going to be alone and they deserve it.

  • Huh, good article (or blog?) AC, and true. I know in the past I have been descriminated against in the work place because I was overweight, so its definitely out there.
  • There's a ridiculous amount of discrimination towards overweight people.  I have gained a very insane amount of weight over the last 4 years, and the difference in the way I'm treated is sort of unbelievable.

The most blatant thing that's happened to me was going to a local bar with my friend, who just happens to be gorgeous, tall, thin model. Naturally.  The bartender could not have ignored me more.  He gave her free drinks, was at her beck and call... I couldn't get a goddamn beer if I'd been dying of thirst in the desert.  I never had this problem 4 years ago :\

At the same time, I have trouble getting super-mad about it, because I know it's something I can change if I put the effort into it.

  • I really don't see a problem with what they're doing. If you were vain and useless enough to become a member of such a vain and useless site, then when you no longer appeal to the vanity of these losers, then you have no use being there. Like PP said; it's a good public service that all these losers have congregated and made a little club so that we can be aware of them.

There's an ex-lax diet and then a bulemia support group out there waiting for you, and then you can rejoin and continue your uselessness when you're skinny again.
  • Ugh, I saw this earlier and was appropriately disgusted. I also tried their website, and because I didn't want to register, had to click on the "too ugly to join but want to browse?" button. Then got some lame message that, due to the sudden onslaught of media attention, they were limiting server use to some members. Funny how "exclusivity" can be so self-perpetrated and subjective.

On a side note, H created a pretty funny infographic of the picture of the two founding dudes for his blog (circles, points to their physical attributes). Among them are "Orange Skin: Because natural color is for pussies."

  • Bec,

I totally agree with you there.  I don't think the company did anything wrong by removing these people, but the company in general disgusts me, as does the fact there is clientele for a company like that.

  • Tucker Max has been around for years. One part of me hates him violently, and then the other part visits his site or book and dies laughing. He is the absolute king of jackassdouchebagfuckers, but the twits he bangs are also fun to laugh at, so I'm very torn for Tucker. But most of me hates him.
  • Bec-I agree.  When I first read his blog long ago, I was like, I hate you!  Wait, this is funny!  I love you!  No, no, I really hate you!

Then I was like, hey, I think I slept with you.

    d'oh!
