Monogram Question

I've been reading that it's a no-no to use the groom's last initial in the monogram before you are married.

Our last initials are the same. (JA--me/MA--him)

Do I go with just our first initials to avoid any hint of impropriety?

Where are you wanting to use a monogram? If you're talking about pre-wedding thank you notes, I'd use your first/middle/last - people know it's your last name. 

If you mean wedding invitations, then I wouldn't use it at all.
