Sad....

A girl on my August board just witnessed an accident at lunch...Car swerves into other lane hits another car...17 year old is the driver of the swervy car, the lady he hit was 70ish, trapped in her car severly injured. Had to use the jaws of life to get her out. She died in the ambulance...the kid admitted to texting while driving.

Sad.

  • That is so horrible :(
  • That is horrible!

I actually worry these days that I'll be hit by someone texting while driving. I have done it in the past (TWD), but I've stopped because I'm paranoid and pay more attention to my surroundings now.

  • I think it's ridiculous that people these days can't go 20 minutes without texting someone. In MN it's illegal to be behind the wheel and texting or doing anything with a cell other than using it as a phone, even if the car is parked, yet people still do it all the frickin time. It pisses me off when i see people doing it, and I always hope they crash into a brick wall. I hope that kid is charged with manslaughter or w/e.

  • New phones are horrible for this.  It is really hard to use them while driving, especially the touch screen kind.  I've noticed it myself (just to call, who in their right mind texts while driving?  seriously?) and it is so bad, I've stopped using my phone in the car.  I think this scenario is only going to get more frequent until they ban cell phone use while driving.

I mean, would you ever read a book while driving?  Same idea in my mind (though I have seen drivers reading the newspaper while in traffic... so dumb!!)

    How sad.
  • I've seen a guy reading a book while on the Interstate before. He had it propped up on the steering wheel. :/

  • I used to think I was a great text/driver because I didn't have to look at the screen to do it.  I'm SO fortunate I never caused an accident and haven't text while driving since I got pregnant over 3 years ago.  I'd never do it again.  I am really glad that they are passing laws in many places.

That poor woman.......even that poor boy.  He has no idea how much he just messed up his life (emotionally more than anything).
  • That's just terrible. Sometimes my FI texts while he drives and I always get really mad at him. It's so unsafe for everybody!

  • Georgia, I used to see that a lot with newspapers around the DC area. I know we're going 25 but now is not the time to be reading a newspaper!
  • Drivers are effing crazy. I've been in two accidents in the past year. My mom wants me to actually move out of LA because of the drivers. I just got my car back from the shop on Monday and yesterday I had someone pull out RIGHT in front of my car. Thank god there was no one in the lane next to me. I honked and he honked BACK. Um, you're the one who almost killed me.

    People are horrible.

  • That is horrific.  By doing something so stupid and unnecessary he just ruined sooo many lives.

The worst I've seen is a lady painting her fingernails on the steering wheel while driving on the highway.

  • I am always amazed when I wait for the bus how many cars go past with drivers on the phone or texting.  And my last apartment was right at a stop sign, again, sooo many people rolling up to the sign while texting.

Yeah I hope they charge him and I'm sure the family can and will sue.

  • Ugh, that is so sad.  Years ago I was on a deserted, side road and was texting while driving and almost flipped my car.  I spun around and somehow stayed on the road but it scared me so badly I will never pick up my phone while driving again.  To this day I never even take it out of my purse when I'm in the car, it can wait.

    Me too.

I followed a lady the other day, that every time traffic slowed down a bit she'd go back to applying her mascara. I kept waiting on someone to jam on the brakes making her shove the brush in her eye.

But sad part is she probably wouldn't learn.

  • I agree this is awful...
I'm in NY and texting here is also illegal.  It became illegal this past October, to which my response was "WTF, hasn't that been illegal for years?!"  My Fi responded "no J,  phone calls were illegal." I couldn't imagine anyone trying to text while driving, but people are stupid.  I know a girl, someone who went to HS with my sister, who updates Facebook and Twitter while driving because, and I quote, "It's not illegal yet!"

  • That is horrible!!   Did you see the Oprah about this?  It was so sad too.

Thankfully I couldn't even text and drive if I wanted to because I suck at it, but I wouldn't anyway because it's so dangerous.

  • Kentucky Kate--that is ridiculous!  I get nervous trying to just get a sip of coffee or water while driving much less do TASKS.  If I am at a red light and it's important, like tellling someone I am running late or will be there to pick them up in 2 minutes.  But only if the light JUST turned red and I know I have 30 seconds. I've seen so many stories like this.  There was a local story in the past  year or so where a couple teens were killed--maybe even up to 4--and they confirmed via phone records that the girl driving was texting. It's sad when as a parent these days, you have to probably talk to your kids more about texting while driving than drinking and driving.
