When is it appropriate to announce your engagement in the local newspaper?

We are getting back our engagement pictures today or tomorrow, but we are not planning to marry until April of 2011.

As I'm looking through the announcements, most of the couples are set to marry within the next 3 months or so.

We got engaged October 2008, had engagement pictures done November 2008, announcement was in the paper January 2009 and our wedding was September 2009.  I have seen announcements in the paper that were a few weeks before the wedding and also a year or so in advance.  I think any time you would like to have it in the paper would be fine.

We did our engagement announcement in the paper a few months after we got engaged, but a year before the wedding.

We're going to try and have our engagement announcement in the paper about a year before our wedding. We will have been engaged about 6 months by then.

On the same topic... what do you put in the announcement? Do you put specific details "Jack and Jill will be getting married up the hill on july 4 with a reception at ..... " ? I guess it doesn't help that I read the paper so I don't know what they typically say...

you should check with the newspaper. Some have guidelines about when they will run the announcements. I know the one we ran in FI's hometown had quite a few regulations we had to follow.

For our newspaper we just had to fill out a form.  They asked various questions about when and where the wedding was, our parents names, educational background, occupation and employer that type of thing.  Then the newspaper is the one to actually write it out.

psi- I wasn't either! It was on my knot checklist though. I hadn't thought about doing it until then, but when I looked it up, most of the girls in my hometown that have gotten married recently had done it.

Ally- Most people have the b&g names, wedding date, officiant/parents names/hometowns/education/current employment info.
