Cat people, help me out?

Re: Cat people, help me out?

  • J - I had a thread in SB about giving fluids to our sick old man.  There was some good ideas in it.  He had to have subcu fluids 3x week and it was unbelievably hard - we just ended up making a standing appt with the techs.  For the meds, we ended up, like Steffi, at a compounding pharmacy for the liquids, and we also got transdermal steriods from the same place.  I just hated making his last few weeks hell for the poor old guy.

J - did you guys ever decide on a dog?
  • Thanks everyone.  I guess I should have specified that we've tried all the "normal" stuff, and our cat is just really, really excellent at avoiding.  I definitely got a few tips here that we haven't tried though, so thank you!

[QUOTE]I've had to give Whisky liquid meds twice a day for the past year, so I feel your pain. The method that works best for me is to set him on the floor and straddle him from behind. Then I lean over and lift his head so that the back of his head is against my chest. Then I open his mouth with one hand and stick the syringe in with the other. You have to do it quickly or else they get squirmy and it goes everywhere. Sometimes I've had to hold his mouth closed with one hand (head still against me for support) and massage his throat so he swallows. Now, that being said, Whisky also began spitting it back up in a kind of frothy, drooly way. I don't know why and the only way I found to stop it was to dilute the meds with water. But, that took forever so recently I got everything switched to pills. I was told that keeping the meds in the fridge makes them taste better, but I don't believe it. Whisky hates them whether they are cold or room temp.

I was going to suggest something similar - I would straddle the kitty between my legs, and quickly get the medicine in her mouth. Attitude makes a big difference - if you act like it's routine and aren't sneaky or weird about it, she might be more accommodating.
