Actually, the times I remember seeing mints and nuts were weddings in IN and KY. Ha. But they were also the cake and punch receptions. I don't remember seeing them in any MO or IL weddings.
Back in the olden days, when most brides and grooms had cake and punch receptions in the church hall, they also put out nuts and mints.
A couple of years ago, my sister-in-law insisted that there be nuts and mints for her daughter's wedding (which was a full dinner reception). She spent hours and hours making the mints. Hardly anyone ate them, she threw them all away.
They aren't regional as far as IA/IL; they're very much in the South as well (don't let my location fool you). The cream cheese mint is old school, like the cucumber tea sandwich, etc.
Do not mess in the affairs of dinosaurs because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
