Critique my menu

I'm planning on printing it in the next week or so, but I'd love to know if you guys think this provides a good variety in terms of tastes. The entrees are already set in stone since the entree choice was on our response cards, but the appetizers and salad can be changed if they sound weird.

Appetizers:
Gruyere & Chutney Mini Grilled Cheese Bites
Scallops Wrapped with Free-Range Bacon
House Made Crab Cakes Served with Remoulade Sauce
Fresh Asparagus with Chevre Cheese Wrapped in Phyllo Dough

Salad:
Poached Pear Salad (field greens, pomegranate marinated pears, gorgonzola cheese, & vinaigrette)

Entrees:
Herb-Roasted Organic Chicken with Roasted Potatoes
or
Mushroom Risotto with wild mushrooms and cream
or
Farfalle Pasta with grilled mozzarella, tomato, & pesto

Dessert:
House Made Caramel Apple Cheesecake

Re: Critique my menu

  • Mmm this sounds delicious!  However, I'm not much help since I'm not a picky eater.

  • Sounds awesome to me!

  • Everything except the salad sounds fantastic. I probably wouldn't eat the salad, but that's just me.

I really want the asparagus and the Farfalle Pasta with grilled mozzarella, tomato, & pesto.

I'm not a fan of cheesecake either, but I am sure there is wedding cake, so I would be happy.

What kind of salad do you think you'd prefer? I'm totally open to different ideas.

And yeah, there will be wedding cake in additioin to the cheesecake... I forgot to put it on there! It's basic yellow cake with buttercream and raspberry preserves in between the layers :)
  • omg that all sounds delicious! especially the appetizers!

My critique is that now I want bacon wrapped scallops :)

Anyway, it all sounds awesome. We had asparagus in phyllo too, and it was a surprise hit! People were raving about it.
  • Sounds awesome!  The dessert has my taste buds going :)

  • Sounds delicious.  My only critique is that I think it's weird to call the bacon free-range but not chicken.

That sounds delightful. I love wedding cake. Your appetizers sound insanely good.

As for the salad, I am personally just not a fan of fruit and chese together in a salad. I'm a picky salad person, and I like tangier salads. But your menu is great.

  • That's an awesome variety for tastes... I think anyone could find something they'd like. I have 2,467 food allergies and I could even find something on there. :)

  • Uh, mini grilled cheese, salad and cheesecake - please be sending me a doggie bag, k thanks.

  • Sounds AWESOME. Drool-worthy.
  • Hehe mery :)

And opalsky, good catch. They should both say "free-range," actually. They're also both organic, but somehow it sounds hoity-toity to me to say "Herb-Roasted Free Range Organic Chicken." Maybe I'm just being weird.
  • Sounds delicious!
  • Now I'm hungry- all sounds good to me- something for everyone!
  • i think you should put in that they are organic! for me that would just push it over the edge of complete awesomeness!

  • Poli, your menu looks wonderful.

The only thing that didn't look good to me was the asparagus, because I don't really care for it.

    Ha! That was Brie.
  • Oops! Sorry opal/brie :) But I'm glad it sounds good so far!
  • Haha, yeah, it was me.

I'd delete free-range and/or organic altogether.  If people are that fussy about where their bacon comes from, they can ask the server.  It does seem a little "hoity-toity" to me.

  • Everything sounds great, but I agree with the salad.  I would maybe do this instead

    Salad:
field greens, strawberrys, gorgonzola cheese or feta & balsmic vinaigrette

I love that salad, but of course just a suggestion :)
  • Sounds deliciously amazing
  • I wanted to serve the same salad, Poli, but my FI nixed it (he thought it was too sweet).  So we're doing organic greens with gorgonzola, baby heirloom tomatoes, toasted pecans and country mustard vinegrette.

BeachBride, that's my specialty go-to potluck salad, except I use goat cheese.  I love strawberries in salad.
  • Sounds great. Now I'm hungry.
What did you decide to do for the names?

Still not sure about how to word the names. I got a lot of great suggestions, though!
  • Sounds good to me!

But a question -- are you printing the appetizers on the menu itself? Are they appetizers that will be served at the table or hors d'oeuvres that will be passed (or stations) before the meal? Because if it's the latter, I wouldn't put them on the menu -- wouldn't people have already seen and eaten them before they see the menu? (Of course, maybe I'm picturing something differently from what you've got planned.)
  • It sounds yummy!

Do you have to pay extra for the 3 entrees?  If so, I would think about eliminating one of the vegetarian choices: Mushroom Risotto with wild mushrooms and cream or Farfalle Pasta with grilled mozzarella, tomato, & pesto...  but I am pretty thrifty.

  • Count me in, that whole menu sounds wonderful Poli.

  • Oh, just wanted to add: our favorite restaurant does a pear, gorgonzola, endive, walnut salad and DH and I both love it. We order it every single time we go there. And Dh has started to make it at home since we enjoy it so much. I'd stick with your original salad.
