Notary Question

We have to mail in our affidavit for our marriage license (out of state wedding). Does anyone know if we have to just sign in front of a notary, or if we have to fill the whole thing out in front of a notary? I've never had to get anything notarized before.

Re: Notary Question

  • It varies state to state.  You could probably just take it to be notarized after filling it out.  They will check your ID, stamp and sign it.

  • a notary just confirms that you are the person signing the document.  they dont care what it is, just that you are who you say you are, and that they watched you sign.
  • I'm pretty sure you just need to sign it in front of the notary.

  • I'm a notary and I would insist on witnessing whatever being signed before I'd notarize it.

Just sign it in front of you, show IDs to verify identity, but you don't need to watch me fill out the form I'm signing, correct?
  • Usually you can fill out everything but the signatures.  It is your signature that the notary is witnessing so you must sign it in front of them but usually filling out the rest of the information is ok.
  • I'm a notary- I want the form filled out before hand, but want to see signatures and ID's.
You should be fine to go ahead and have it filled out and then sign there. There are usually notaries at banks, free of charge if you have an account there.
