Teachers/ Other school employees

If your school cancels classes, are you expected to show up?

My school cancelled classes for tomorrow, but the website says:

XXX University Law School classes are cancelled for Thursday, January 7, 2010, due to inclement weather. Until further notice, all University administrative offices are open and scheduled classes continue.

Perhaps I'm stupid, but does this mean I get a snow day?  FWIW, I'm considered "non-essential" personnel in the law school.  I tried calling my boss but no answer.  Since I just started, I have no idea what protocol is.

Re: Teachers/ Other school employees

  • Damn.  Does that mean the law school is closed but all the other departments are still open?  I'm confused too.
  • Yeah, it's weird.  All they have so far is law school classes are cancelled (out of the whole university).  I work in the law school and my boss is super paranoid about snow, so I doubt anything bad would happen if I just didn't show up, but I thought that was worded pretty badly.

  • I think in those instances, faculty and students get the day off. Admin's/Staff still have to go in. BUT---if the weather is bad enough that they canceled classes for tomorrow already, chances are they'll just close the whole place down before too long.

  • I hate you Rach.  Wrong answer.

My drive home was an hour and a half last night the roads were so bad and it's STILL SNOWING.  I do not want to attempt to drive in just to be sent home.  Ugh.

I'm hoping that the law school just called it super early, and the rest of the school will cancel later tonight or early tomorrow morning.

  • I would get the day off but I am in a high school. In a college... I would say probably. but not sure.

  • Do you have a secretary in your office? If so, he/she may send an update if your not required in---or, your boss would (I would hope).

I know you'd like a snow day, but I just don't want you to take an unnecessary one (and get in trouble!).

  • Sounds like a sick day to me. Our problem is often getting to the main roads (which are plowed). We were closed 3 weeks ago, and while the snow total will be about half, we're due for near-blizzard conditions again tomorrow morning.

It's the kind of day I'd want J driving me to work, but that causes issues in the afternoon.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • I would take that as the administrators are required to go but all other faculty have the day off. The principals at my school still have to go in even though the rest of us get the day off.
  • Yeah, I'm very confused right now.

If I call in the morning and just say "the roads are bad, I'm not coming in," nobody will care.  Like I said, my boss and the other people I work with are super sensitive about snow driving and she's made it patently clear to me several times she doesn't want me driving if I'm not 100% okay with it.  Right now...I'm totally not okay with driving, and I'm pretty generally fine with snow driving.  The roads were a nightmare on the way home.

Our secretary wouldn't know anything I don't.  We got an e-mail from the Dean just saying "classes are cancelled" again.  Nothing else.  Bah.

  • Hm.  I'm totally confused now.  I just realized that the reason law school classes are the only ones cancelled are becasue the rest of the university is still on winter break.  So, there's that.

  • If my school closes, it closes classes, the clinic, and all offices - not just part. I am lucky in that.
The former president was never very willing to make that call though. The interim is a little more likely, it seems. The word "blizzard" makes a big difference, especially when they pull the plows and tow trucks off the roads.

I did a 180 making a turn during the last storm, and that did me in. I parked at home, and wasn't moving for 36 hours.

  • Whenever UConn would cancel classes for snow, I'd still have to go to work. I worked at the Student Union and it needed to stay open so that "snowed-in" students had a place to go. I also worked in a mailroom on campus and had to work those days as well.

Where I work, if there is a snow day (meaning no school), then I don't go. If there is a delay, I go on time.

  • Hiya brie! Is the weather really bad over there? I guess compared to you what we have is just the beginning, but our school is already cancelled for tomorrow.

Anyway I have no idea what the protocol is for law school, but for us, somewhere on the school districts website is a link to "inclement weather guidelines," which lists out in detail who is supposed to go in and who gets the day off if classes are cancelled or if the whole district is closed.

However, that doesn't really help you. I wouldn't go in probably, just call in the morning to make sure. Be really careful if you do have to go out anywhere!
