Label Addresses on Invitations

I was wondering what you guys thought about using clear or white labels to address the invitations to everyone in a nice script writing since I can't afford to pay someone to write in caligraphy.

Re: Label Addresses on Invitations

  • Clear labels in a pretty font and wrap-around labels are fine.  Any kind of label that is pretty and coordinates with your invitation is becoming more acceptable, just steer clear of white labels with plain black font because it can look like junk mail and get tossed.  Handwriting is best obviously.  It doesn't have to be calligraphy.

  • Most people here are going to tell you not to use labels. And I totally understand that handwriting is more personal.

However, I did use labels... I got plain white shipping sized labels (a little bigger than normal), and I designed them in Photoshop to match the rest of the invitations (same colors, fonts, etc.). So, I decided to forgo the personalized handwriting but replaced it with labels that matched the rest of the invitations' design.
  • I thought about using clear labels, but it was honestly just cheaper to handwrite them.  My handwriting is decent.  But I can understand using clear labels if you're worried about it looking messy.  If I had really bad handwriting, I would have used labels.  It's more important for them to be legible.

But I agree with PP, I wouldn't use white labels or the invites are going to look like junk mail.

  • You could also just print directly on the envelopes.  That's what we did, and it was very easy and cost-effective, plus you can use whatever font you'd like.

This is what we did also.  Very easy to setup and do on your own.

  • I'm going to just write mine out by hand.  I think it's more personal that way.  However if you do the labels, make sure they aren't huge compared to the font you are using.  I got a wedding invite where the label was basically the size of the envelope.  It looked horrible.

I would run your envelopes through the printer.  Labels, even clear, can look tacky.  If your handwriting is really bad, then no it wouldn't be the best choice.  Just see if you can print them off with a mail merge using excel.
  • I think any kind of labels are honestly fine.  No one cares when they get the envelope.  When I receive mail all I care is that my name is spelled right.  I used white labels and no one batted an eye about it.

  • We also printed directly onto our envelopes. It's probably a little more time-consuming, but we liked how it looked.
  • I'd hand write them. Always. I know a lot of people will say labels are fine, but when I get one with a label I'm always a bit disappointed.
  • I used clear labels in a pretty font.  I have awful handwriting.  I addressed our Save the Dates and someone asked FI if we have a kid who we let address them. Embarassed

Some people think it is taboo, but you aren't doing anything that would put your guests out.  I think anyone who would get their panties in a knot over a label on an envelope they are just going ot throw away, is looking for a reason to get upset.

  • You can also buy these fake calligraphy pen/markers. It makes any handwriting look pretty- I've used them for Thank You notes.

To be honest, some people will notice the envelopes. We got a lot of compliments on ours.

  • Everywhere I read it says never to use labels on envelopes. However, i'm using labels but just for rehearsal dinner invite. On the wedding invite i ran them thru our mailing machine.

If you look in your phonebook for a local small mailhouse and call them up and ask them how much they'd charge to just run X amount of envelopes thru their mailing machine. You email them a spreadsheet, then bring the envelopes and it only takes about 5 minutes and the machine imprints them for you. I work at a mail house and i stood there while the guy did mine and it literally took 5 minutes tops.

  • I used clear labels in a plain font because we had an informal wedding and I didn't care about putting a lot of time, effort, or money into the envelopes since they are the first things thrown away when people receive wedding invites. I also have crappy little kid handwriting, and I wasn't about to ask my mom or sister to handwrite my addresses since that would be mean.

  • I'd run them directly through the printer in a nice calligraphy font. I do think labels would look cheap unless you design them to really be a part of the whole invitation package. FWIW, I DO notice envelopes -- even  before I open the invitation, the envelope is a really good clue to what you're going to find inside.

This is what we did too, in a nice scripted font.  I thought they came out very nice.
I wanted to do clear labels in a nice font, but FI and my mom had a fit telling me how bad that was. I don't see the problem with it, but I was outvoted.
