Tell me about your local farmers market

I went to our local one today, and I was really disappointed.  I'm going to try some others in the area to see if they are any better.  I'm not sure what I was expecting, but the fruits/vegetables that were there were SUPER expensive and there wasn't much of a selection.
Do you frequent your local farmers market?  What do you like about it?

Re: Tell me about your local farmers market

  • I spent a lot at the local farmers market two weeks ago, but I also got a lot of stuff. Most of the vegetables are cheap.  The fruit is a little more expensive.   I'm way out in the burbs though, so the veggies do not have far to travel.
  • I was all excited to go today, since the one in my town is only open on Fridays from 2-6.  I'm NEVER off on Friday, so I've never been able to check it out.  I was finally able to make it over there, and no luck at all.  It seems people are always raving about them, so maybe the one in my town is just sub-par.

  • Our old farmers market in the city was great -- wonderful deals on great fruits and vegetables, and meat. The one that we go to now in our upscale suburbs is prettier and cleaner -- but MUCH more expensive. We've realized that it's cheaper to go to our regular supermarket for that kind of stuff now than to go to the farmer's market, which is a shame since we enjoy going there.

  • There's one right by my workplace every tuesday right now (crystal city, VA)... and It's a little expensive but the produce is good and I'm eating fruit every night instead of sugary things.  It's also kind of a poor selection; there are lots of vendors but they all sell the exact same things.

I just ended up with my friend's community supported agriculture share (Mt. Vernon Square, DC) and I don't know how much she pays but you get a good amount of food.

There is a really good one in Fairfax VA with reasonable prices but it's kind of a haul for me.

And I've heard wonderful things about Eastern Market in DC but it's only open on Sundays and I have a class Sundays.  But if you ever visit DC give it a shot, they have EVERYTHING.

I love my market! I love it. I normally start going when asparagus is in season and every saturday until the fall. Generally speaking the prices vary between vendors anywhere from 10 cents to a dollar, and it also varies on how far into the season of that particular food it is (early asparagus is 3.50, late aspargus is 2). Strawberries are ALWAYS expensive, it seems, as are raspberries and cherries. Most other fruit is pretty reasonable, as are the vegetables. I really love some of the vendors I frequent, they always have great quality and are so friendly, so I will pay a little extra to buy from them. Ive also been given "credit" with them if I run out of money, they just let me pay them back later, which is great.
  • I'm jealous Nebb!  Hopefully I'll find a great one around here.  Like fangsiting said earlier, there are A LOT of farms around here, so I'm sure there are some better ones.

  • I really want to do a community garden in my neighborhood next year, but I'm guessing our association will shoot that down.  I can ask though :)

  • We have a great Farmer's Market here in Des Moines! It's on Saturday morning, downtown. It's full of homegrown (and yummy!) vegetables and all kinds of other cool stuff. There are blocks upon blocks upon blocks of vendors. Everything from fresh homegrown vegetables and fruits, to baked good, to homemade items such as artwork, baskets, jewelry, etc. We also have a wonderful array of wineries here, and many of them are at the Farmer's Market. It's really a great place to be on Saturday mornings!

Another good one is Saturday Market in Portland, Oregon. I could go on and on about it, but suffice to say... if you are in that city on a Saturday during season, you should go to it! It's amazing.

  • I go every week. We have one year round, which includes fruits and veggies, olive oil, cheese, fresh seafood/pork/beef, eggs, cut flowers, mushrooms, all sorts of prepared foods (greek olives, pitas, salsas, plus food stands with breakfast stuff, sandwiches, pupusas, indian foods, etc), and even some craft tents with soap, jewelry, etc. It's HUGE and really crowded.

We really love shopping locally. We've thoght about getting a CSA but we have fun picking out what looks good that week and FI says he likes to "spread the money around" to the farmers. We get to know the people we buy from week to week,

You're talking about the one by The Grove right? I just started going and I thought it was the best. We have one in Atwater Village it is way smaller.

Thats one of my favourite parts of going to the market.
  • Kelly - come to ours in Wheaton.  Saturdays until 2 PM.  It's along the train tracks - Main and Liberty.

  • Tons of vendors, and the fruits and vegetables always are good.  Not to mention the baked goods!  Downtown Wheaton is always good for a wander-around too.
  • I go to the Logan Square farmers market almost every Sunday in Chicago.  It's about two blocks from where we live.  It runs from 10-2, I think.  There is a huge selection of items, from flowers to baked goods and TONS of fruits and vegetables.  One vendor has an amazing selection of different types of mushrooms.  There is usually a crepe stand, too, and those are delicious, but they're not always there.  Prices can be pretty high.  I took my mom last weekend, and she was suprised at how expensive things were, but then again she lives downstate where groceries are dirt cheap.

<div>No, the one in Hollywood! It's 8:30-1:30 on Sundays. But the one by the Grove is great too. I heard the one in Santa Monica is good, but I find it's mostly prepared food vendors and not many straight fruits and vegetables. At least the weekend one, not sure about the Wednesday one.</div>
