Canadians who marry Americans

Anyone know how their immigration process works? My cousin is marrying a canadian and he keeps gettin different answers from different lawyers. After you get married how long before the american can work in canada? Do you have ridiculous green card laws like we do?

TIA

Re: Canadians who marry Americans

  • The simple answer is - the Canadian needs to apply to sponsor the American, and then the American needs to apply for permanent residency in Canada. I believe these applications would be submitted at the same time but I have no idea how long it takes or anything. The immigrant should be able to work as soon as he/she is a permanent resident.

Of course, I'm not a lawyer and can't tell you any specifics. But if you're just curious about the basic process, this is generally how it works.

  • Thanks Ring! apparently no one in my family can marry an american haha. I married a UK boy, my brother a Peruvian, and my only cousin is marrying a Canadian. Obviously I was able to advise him on how it would be for her to marry him but I was curious if Canada had other laws/rules. We had to jump through hoops for my brother and I but it's all worth it in the end. They are trying to decide if they should get married in the USA or Canada, basically wherever they both can work the soonest. Too bad the lawyers all have different stories.

    thank you again!
