Sometimes people suck

Someone abandoned a dog in the tennis court across from our house in the middle of the night. The dog is really young. She had a chain around her neck, heavy duty, with a towel wrapped around part of it. We took her food and water this morning and she was ravenous. We've called the shelter to come pick her up, but this just breaks my heart. People can be so awful sometimes.

ah...because of the chain it sounds like it got loose from someone. let's hope for the best.

well they shouldn't have a chain around a poor dog's neck.  i hope it works out for the best.  you did the right thing.

yea the chain could be animal abuse but i'm not sure the authorities could do anything unless they new the owner.

That is so sad. I hate when people do things like this. My junior year of high school FI came to my mom's house with 4 little puppies that someone had dropped off at the landfill. My mom gave me a week to get rid of all of them before we took them to the shelter. One of them still lives with my dad :-)

How awful... I remember one time, now this was a long time ago, about 10 yrs, I was walking through a completely deserted park of a national forest, hiking with my BF at the time, and we came across 5 puppies (1 was laying on the ground dead :(  ) that had been abandoned. They were sooo happy to see us, it was really sad. We took them back to his house but they were all sick with something (maybe parvo), and just got worse and worse, eventually all of them died. SPAY AND NEUTER, PEOPLE!!! really, how hard is it to be responsible for your pet.

That makes me so sad and mad! :( My dog was one of those "came from the woods" puppies. Before she came to the animal rescue group who took her in, someone had dumped her and her siblings out in the cold to die. I can't really imagine how people can be that cruel. Hopefully the puppy you found will find a good home! And if anyone is interested in the movement against dog-chaining, check out Coalition To Unchain Dogs. They're an entirely volunteer-run organization based in Durham that pays for and builds fences for low-income residents who would otherwise chain their dogs. They're a great group and a lot of fun!

omg that just breaks my heart. My dog is like my child, I could never imagine doing that to a dog. : ( Hopefully, the dog will find a good home to live in.

That is so sad :(  I know what you mean about some people not needing pets.  One of my old neighbors just lets their pets run around outside and several have been hit by cars.  And they go get more pets, or purposely breed the ones they have, and then let them run around outside.  It's sad, we tried calling someone about it but they never did anything.  Completely agree with Katherine, SPAY & NEUTER if you want another pet adopt one that needs a home already.

Animal control just came and got her. They said that they would see if the owner claims her and then put her up for adoption. We managed to get the chain off her neck. It was so heavy. Poor puppy. F#@king owners are horrible.

Aww Grace, you're the little pup's guardian angel!  I hope that the owners who left her don't take her back, she deserves to be in a home where people love and care for her. One of our friends has a neighbor that completely neglects their cute as ever 5 month old lab puppy.  She always gets out, hasn't had any vaccines, and sometimes doesn't even have fresh water to drink. WWYD in this situation? We've told them to call animal control but they are torn since its the neighbor's dog and they don't know what could happen to her if she does have some disease...

Bagantt-The organization I mentioned (post above), Coalition to Unchain Dogs, sees this a lot in Durham and might have some information for you as to who to call besides animal control. You can email them at:unchaindogscoalition@yahoo.comFrom my understanding if you do call animal control, they won't immediately take the dog away but will assess the situation and won't tell the owner who called on them. They'll usually give a warning to get proper vet care/water/etc. and then they'll make another surprise visit to make sure those things were taken care of.Hope that helps some! I hate to hear of puppies suffering!

Thanks CJ.  I'll email them to see what they think.  Its so sad.  Our friends that live there have our dog's brother so we always take our fur baby over there to play.  They used to let the puppy next door play as well, but then we found out she has gotten no shots/vaccinations and it probably isn't safe for her to be around our dogs... She is too freaking cute though.  If we had any idea how much her vet bills would be, we'd try to find a friend or good samaritan and just take her in the middle of the night - but her legs look strange and I'm afraid she has Parvo among other possible diseases...

bagantt - take the dog to a rescue group who does adoption outside of the shelter....there is no way the owner will get the dog back. when i used to work rescue we had a team that used to do this on rare and urgent occasions....no, its not completely legal but honestly no one is going to care or notice. 9 times out of 10 when we took dogs from owners who neglected and chained they never even went looking for them. the reason we palced in rescue was just in case they did go looking the first and most likely only place they looked was the city/county shelter and they are just going to ask for papers and shot records and return the dog after a warning is issued or fine paid. placing in rescue assured that the dog wouldnt end up back with the same owner or euthanized, instead it was guaranteed a happier and safer home through the rescue. only down side to this right now (b/c of economy) is that most rescues are at full capacity so you would need to make sure a rescue has room and would be willing to take the dog prior to "confiscating" it.

That's so sad :(Where I live now people still hold the belief that you shouldn't fix your pets because they're "supposed" to breed.  And then they'll do things like throw the puppies and kittens off cliffs into the ocean because they don't want to deal with them.  And there's no animal shelters so if they don't get thrown off cliffs they're left to die in parks instead >:(

Shigaites - that is horrible! Where do you live??? I think I remember you saying it was outside the US but is that legal there?

I live in Japan now and they have hardly anything in the way of animal protection laws here, especially when it comes to pets.  They have some bare bones legislation in regards to farm animals but from what I've heard it doesn't get enforced often.
