Save the date trouble with a small twist

I sent out my save the dates not too long ago and just received a lovely note from family friends (from Chicago, the wedding is in L.A.) stating why they will not be able to make it.

The problem is that our wedding is the same day as their daughter's high school graduation.

I know that etiquette dictates that you still send an invitation, but the thing is that this is something that will not change. Unless their daughter somehow fails to graduate they will not be able to make it.

I would have no problem sending out an invitation anyway but I am concerned that they might be offended. They might see it as my not paying attention when they took the time to write such a lovely note and being pushy. But then I get worried they might be offended if I do not send an invite.

Should I call and ask if they still want an invite? That seems a little ridiculous. Should I send a note explaining that I understand and that the circumstances being what they are I won't  pester them with a formal invitation?
