Hyphenated last name...which ititial do you use?? Pls help!

Hi Ladies,
I am marrying the man of my dreams...except his last name is...well...different. He is Finnish and I guess somewhere down the line in his family a couple hypenated their last names and then everyone since them has used the hypenated name as their surname...

SOOO....what to do...the name is long and hard to pronounce (lucky me :)) but I dont know what to do for our monogrammed items and just in general...does anyone have any suggestions?

The last name is "Latva-Kiskola"

Thank you!!

  • I would say, instead of hyphenating the monogram you could do

    "your name"  LK "his name"

  • You are alphabetized under L.

Just like a hyphenated word would be alphabetized under the first initial,
like PART-TIME.  Would you alphabetized PART-TIME under T?  No.
  • You go by the first initial. If you could find a way to use the L and K, that would work too, I think.

  • With a nicely designed monogram, you CAN incorporate both letters. I had a friend who had the last name O'Neill and she used both the O and the N in her center letter. The way it was designed looked great -- it wasn't just the O next to the N, they were intertwined. It worked.

If you're designing it yourself, go to a stationery store and look at their vendor albums. I get a lot of my ideas from those!

  • I have a friend with a hyphenated name and she uses both initials in her initials. So say her name is Jane Anne Doe-Smith. She uses JADS as her initials. What does your FI do? I would think perhaps only using the L might be appropriate.

  • My dentist has a hyphenated last name but she only uses the second half.  So even though her name would be Jane Doe-Smith she calls herself Dr. Smith.

Ask your FI what he thinks.  If he had to sign his initials, what would he use? Go with that.
  • I used to work in a bookstore, and any authors that had hyphenated names (And you'd be surprised how often that actually happens) were shelved under the "first" name.

The being said, I'd either go with "L" or "LK" depending on what your FI considers his "initials" to be.

  • Who needs a monogram?  If it is too hard or looks weird, just skip it.
  • Thanks for the advice girls!! I'm thinking I'll try to use the LK (but if I need to for some reason the L will be the more prominant)

    Appreciate all of the help!!

  • Hi Heather,
I'm taking my fiance's name which is also hyphenated.  His last name is Nomura-Weingrow.  This means my initals will be KBNW.  My last name will be alphabetized under "N".  I think if you do a monogram it needs to be N-W (can't forget the hyphen).  -KBS
