Follow up a Missing Gift?

A friend in another country got us a present off our Amazon registry. Because we were away on our honeymoon, the package got returned and our friend refunded. I called him to let him know that the present was never received, but much appreciated, and he said he would contact Amazon to have it resent.
It is now 2 months later and I contacted Amazon and they said they have not received any alternate instructions.
I'm writing thank you notes and am a little stumped by what to do in this situation. Call him and say "Hey, so Amazon never got your instructions"? Write a thank you note for his well wishes and good intentions and totally just omit that we never got his present? Or write a thank you note saying, "we are so grateful for you present which, unfortunately, still seems lost in the mail"?

  • Yep. What pp said.

And maybe it'll cross his mind later and you'll still get it... maybe... lol

"I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels." -Isaiah 61:10 NKJV
  • Just send him a thank you for attending your wedding, it was great to see him. Blah blah.  It might remind him and he can resend it, if he wants.  If not, no big deal.  The big picture is he was there to share the day and celebrate with you.

AND I hate when people call them presents.  I feel like presents are for kids.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • I agree, I feel the full weight of the awkwardness of the situation. However, in my (now!) husband's culture you send a thank you note to everyone for even thinking about you while brushing their teeth. "Thank you for your text message even though you couldn't make it." "Thank you for the gift you sent even though you weren't invited." Really.
This friend is from that culture, and he was invited and he could not make it. So theoretically, he deserves a note for his well-wishing email. I'm just afraid that he may have THOUGHT he resent the present, will get a note from us for his email, and wonder why we didn't thank him for the gift. It's a minefield. A little bit.
