How far in advance can I send the wedding gift?

I'm going to a wedding in early May.  I've already received my invitation.  Is it fine to have the gift sent now or is it customary to wait until the wedding gets closer?  I'm new at this!

Anytime after you get the invite is fine IMO.

You can send it now.  Our wedding is May 8 and we've gotten several gifts already.

I actually like getting them earlier, because it's nice to get thank you notes out of the way before I have a huge pile of them to do.

The earlier the better! (unless you know the couple is moving or something).  Who doesn't like getting gifts?
