Will you play with proper nouns?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8604625.stm

Scrabble is allowing proper nouns in the game now.

One of the comments:

"Just because people these days are finding Scrabble too hard to play, the rules shouldn't be changed." and I agree. We shouldn't dumb down a classic game because people can't come up with words that aren't Pepsi and Madonna.

Re: Will you play with proper nouns?

  • The dumbing down of society truly haunts me.
  • No way! Theres more than enough words out there. Sometimes though we'll play special ways like only proper nouns or only names (normal names not weird spelling ones)
  • It's the great Scrabble Schism of 2010!

  • Have you seen the movie Idiocracy? I've heard it's so weirdly accurate to what's going on today.

  • Dumb. Next thing you know Exhavasdfr will be allowed because it's a name.

  • I really liked the movie Idiocracy even though its so stupid. It's scary.
Yes! Themed games! I also like bananagrams.
I got so pissed when I started playing "words with friends" because my friend was playing the weirdest crap, it will let you do all kinds of words and you know she was just trying letters and had no idea what the words meant. I do it too now Embarassed
  • Bananagrams is fun too! My FMIL likes to play it but no one will play with her but me, haha! They're all sick of playing.

  • Do people really need the Scrabble makers to tell them it is okay to use proper nouns? Unless you are playing competively (does that even exist?) then it only matters what the other people in your game think. The Scrabble police won't come knocking at your door if you play a proper noun.

All that said, I don't think the Scrabble makers should change the rules to allow for proper nouns. If people have such a hard time without proper nouns then they can either stop playing, use the proper nouns anyway, or go read a dictionary.

This cracked me up!  I read it out loud to DH and he liked it, too.

The beginning of Idiocrisy is terrifying but well worth the price of renting it.

I think I am just bitter that my parents would never bend the rules when I was younger and don't have a ton of sympathy. Then again, no matter what the Scrabble makers say, I doubt they would allow me to play a proper noun. It's not in our 3rd edition Scrabble dictionary so it isn't valid!

  • lol, I just love that people couldn't just decide to use proper nouns on their own.

  • There actually is competitive Scrabble and I think it is very sad that they are adding proper nouns.  Who is going to decide which proper nouns are okay and which aren't ?  Just because I have heard of a name and you haven't doesn't mean it isn't allowed.  Are they going to start letting contractions and foreign words too?
