Practice cake?

Good morning ladies,

I'm the MOH in a friend's wedding later this fall, and we're having her shower this weekend.  Everything is ready to go, food's ordered, etc. My friend knows the date of the shower, but that's all she knows (had to plan it around her work and school schedule).  She called me last night to "make sure we knew to get the practice cake" for the shower.  I was a little taken aback that she would tell someone what to do for her shower that someone else is throwing for her, but I might be wrong on that.

Does anyone know what a practice cake is? We were doing a twist on a "high tea" theme with finger foods, scones, cupcakes, as well as heavy apps. There will be plenty of foods and desserts, but I hadn't gotten a tiered cake (or even a sheet cake).

Any advice? Is this a cake her and her FI "practice" cutting at the shower? Is this common?
