NWR: Work Holiday Party

So we are having our holiday party Dec 30. It is at one of the department head's houses (the party is only for our specific department), and the invite says "food and drinks will be provided". Usually, going to a holiday party or get together, I would bring a bottle of wine for the host, but I work for a church and know that they do not drink. Should I forego bringing anything altogehter, or is it necessary I bring something? If so, what do you think would be appropriate?

Re: NWR: Work Holiday Party

  • one thing I like to do when I have NO idea what to bring is some flowers for the hostess.  Its pretty much always greatly appreciated.

  • Maybe a box of chocolates or homemade fudge for the host. If not, I wouldn't worry about it bc it sounds like everything is going to be provided.
  • What about a bottle of sparkling grape juice or a nice holiday cookie tray with some homemade cookies?
  • Maybe a potted poinsettia?

  • I like the idea of flowers of chocolate.  Are you sure alcohol will even be there?
Since you said they don't drink, it might be awkward if they didn't plan on serving alcohol, and you show up with a bottle of wine.

Yes, I alreday had decided not to bring wine, given the circumstance. Sorry I guess I didn't make that clear.

Lots of great ideas, I know they enjoy food quite a bit, so maybe something along the lines of the chocolates or cookies...
  • ditto the flowers suggestion.

<div>This. Or some other plant. I read that poinsettias are NOT poisonous for pets, but if the host has pets, they might not know that and won't want it around. </div>

[QUOTE] Also, I once had a guest insist on signing me carols as a holiday party "thank you gift" and it was immensely awkward.

<div>Hahaha that would be awkward. I agree with flowers, since there will probably be lots of desserts and food there already. </div>
