So...my first day

I am replacing a girl going on maternity leave. She was supposed to train me for the next 3 weeks or until her due date around that time. Well she went in for a check up today and they sent her to the hospital, keeping her overnight for sure. They are probably keeping her and inducing her in the next couple of days. This is sooo frustrating. I've never used a multi-line phone before and she left a ton of half finished projects on her desk. I'm going to go to lunch soon and just cry. Arg.

I'm about to take my crying lunch break in a few minutes. I wish you lived nearer to me so we could cry together. And get drunk.

My partner here got fired suddenly. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do now.

  • Oh my gosh! Any idea why? And I'm assuming you were in the middle of at least one project together?

  • There's no crying in baseball!

It will be okay LVB, no one expects you to know it all in one morning :)

  • I'm sure the customers calling in don't appreciate being hung up on when I'm trying to transfer them. Whoops...

  • I'm sure someone will be able to help you. Hopefully, I mean the girl took vacation and lunch breaks, right?

But I'm sorry, is it a really big office? If its 4 lines or under its not too bad.

    Good luck!

  • Don't worry, LVB, you'll learn it!  You're a smart girl, and I'm sure they'll understand if it takes a little time to adjust.  Try not to stress.

    Sorry, salt, that sucks!  :(

<div>Yeah we are in the middle of a bunch of things. Events are coming up, stuff has to be delivered to different locations, etc. I usually don't do that part of the job so I don't know if I'm supposed to be doing it now or not and I also don't know the status on a lot of things.</div><div>
</div><div>She is also a very close friend of mine outside of work and this affects her in a very bad way for personal reasons, but I am not going to discuss those here.</div><div>
</div><div>And yeah I have no idea why she was let go and I don't really want to know. I stay out of office drama as much as I can. </div>

<div>Just let them know before you transfer that it might happen. I'm sure they will understand under the circumstances. :)</div>

  • Oh no LVB! Good luck!

That sort of happened to my mom. She was taking over for a woman who ended up giving birth at 32 weeks. So she got about 1 week of training rather than 2 months+. Oops. It worked out fine. And I actually became a nanny for the woman who had the baby.

No, it's not a huge office, but there's something special to do to transfer to each sales rep. Some will take calls, some wont. Some have assistants, some don't. Just very confusing!

  • That really sucks, I'm sorry.  I had a job like that where a friend asked me to come in and answer the phones for his office while the sec. was gone and she never came back.  So suddenly I was in charge of getting her half-assed projects done and helping people on the phone.  I had no clue what to do, he wasn't any help either because he didn't do that work.  I cried almost every night.  It will get better though, stick it out, ask for help as much as you want to, and know you are doing the best you can in the circumstance.  Good luck :)
  • I actually have a job where I answer mulitple phone lines as well. It can be frustrating as hell at first, but you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly.  Hopefully the people you answering for are understanding of the situation and won't be complete asses about it if a call gets messed up.

p.s. I'm a lurker getting a little post happy today.

  • That sucks LVB and Salt! I've had a good friend let go before and it sucks a lot at first.

LVB, try to keep your chin up, take deep breaths, and think about which flavor of wine you want to drink tonight. :) Because days like this deservev a big o' glass. Hopefully your coworkers are understanding of the situation. If not, fuckem! You're still getting a paycheck at the end of the day!
  • Bright side?  It won't be boring, and you can show improvement easily, and talk about how you're a self starter, etc.  :D

Until then, plan for happy hour.

  • Salt & LVB - I wish I could send you both a drink!

LVB - hang in there and make cheat sheets.  Our receptionist has them and it really helps when I have to cover her lunch breaks and whatnot.

Salt - I'm so sorry about your friend, that really sucks :(  A girl who worked here got fired right after her husband left her.  But then she met some guy at Wawa and he turned out to be a millionaire.  So I hope something really great happens for your friend now.
