So, I'm a bit jealous

Re: So, I'm a bit jealous

  • Sucrets - The other option they had was a $14k 2008 Chevy Malibu. It had been leased for 2 years and I guess that turned them off from it. So, they spent another 5-7k to get the Mazda.

My middle brother tried to pull crap like your half brother. He never needed braces/glasses like my other brother and I did, so he tried to convince my mom to give him money for it. Yeah, right. And then because he joined the Army and didn't go to college, he tried to get them to give him money because they paid for a lot of my college. They said no. He's crazy.

Brie - Uh oh. What did FMIL give as a gift? Did you post this, because I must have missed it!

  • And some thumbtacks.

  • Gretch - how could that have been the ONLY other option?  It's not like you guys live in the middle of nowhere...

Sorry, our kids aren't getting brand new cars.

My dad had put deposits down on a few cars, but they never worked out. My parents take a prospective car to their mechanic before purchasing and each had something wrong with it that the dealer was unwilling to fix. The Malibu was alright, other than the fact that it was a leased car. My dad was so stressed and according to my mom, was going to give himself a heart attack, so they just made a decision and chose the Mazda.

Brie - THUMBTACKS!? Those might be an okay gift if they were a) in a stocking and b) you were a teacher or someone who needed them at work, but what!?

  • And Brie - Out of curiosity, do you know what FBIL got from FMIL for Christmas?

  • She is a big garage sale person.  She was bragging to me at Thanksgiving about how she hasn't bought anything new in probably 5 years.

She bought us, as a joint gift, one of our casual place settings off our registry ($30ish) and then we got a box with all these random gifts.  I got the bronze cat thing, plus a package of thumbtacks and chip clips.  FI got a game he asked for by name, a used DVD he already owns, and a completely useless reference book.

Other random gifts from her include "Wild Birds of Missouri" (I hate birds and we didn't live in MO at the time), a notepad, and some awful dangly star earrings I will never wear.  She keeps talking about how she is specifically not going to buy a new outfit for the wedding or "waste money" getting her hair done.  They drive a 15 year old beater and are considering upgrading to a 10 year old used car.  All the food in their house is the cheapest, most nutritionally void brand in the store.  It kills me.

The kicker is, they have a ton of money.  They both had good jobs for a long time and retired early and have a huge pension.  They're just cheap.

  • I have no idea what FBIL/FSIL got since we weren't there for Christmas, but we went in with the two of them to buy FILs a brand new laptop.  More than we spent on my mom, who got us a lot of really nice gifts.

  • Wow - talk about random gifts! I'm surprised you have the cat thing on display!

  • Oh, FI put it on the mantle as a joke.  It's in a closet now.

  • Sorry you are feeling like that. I would never buy my 16 y/o a new car! Are you freekin kidding me?!?!? The first new car I ever had was the one I bought myself 4 years ago.

I can't say there's ever been any jealousy/issues with my sister and I because there is 11 years between us. My parents did purchase a newer family car when I went to college as a commuter. They wanted something safe and reliable for me to travel with those years. They also did the same for my sister, but like I said there is 11 years between us and it's not just "her" car it was a family purchase.

Brie they sound exactly like my in-laws. They live like they don't have 2 nickels to rub together and their bank account could choke a mule! This year for Christmas they gave me rooster coasters and a rooster gravy boat. I ABSOLUTELY HATE ROOSTERS! It's a longstanding family joke and they've heard it numerous times over the years. On a funny note they did get DH and his brother matching argyle sweaters from JCP. My SIL got the photos of them and I cannot wait until I get a copy!

  • My litle sister always got more christmas presents from me because shes "younger" and I have had 5 more years than her... I never understood that. But I also think my sis may be jealous or angry about me because she always gets compared to me regaring life direction, school, descions.. which isn't fair.

  • Id just like to say Im jealous of your brother as well I drive a 2003 Mercury mountaineer which is a fine car but not a brand new sexy 2010 car like he got.
  • I'm not jealous of my siblings, but certainly, we've all been treated differently. I was treated much more harshly- as the eldest child, my parents were really uncertain of what to let me do etc. To give an example, I had to beg and plead to get my mother to allow me to grow my ridiculously ugly fringe out- at age 11, she felt I was 'too young' to know what to do with my hair (it wasn't like I was asking to change the colour or get a Mohawk!). There are many examples I could provide, but ultimately I do understand how you feel. My younger brother and sister never had to deal with the same type of expectations and rules that were placed on me.

My younger sister (who is 18) had a car bought for her, and complains when she has to pay for petrol- meanwhile, I had to work so I could afford to buy my own and pay for insurance etc. I didn't get the handouts that she gets, but she is very much my father's favourite child and he gives her whatever she asks for. I think when you have a youngest with a large age difference to the other children in the family, they're destined to be a little spoilt.

Gosh cars are cheap there. I'd heard that they were, but didn't quite realise the price difference! We got a 2009 Mazda 3 a few months ago- it cost us $30,000.
