Tiger Woods' Statement

http://blogs.golf.com/presstent/2009/12/tiger-woods-admits-to-affairs-i-have-let-my-family-down.html

Yeah, we figured as much.

Does he deserve privacy or because he's a public figure he should just suck it up?

Re: Tiger Woods' Statement

  • My thought is I do not care.... He did not hurt any one let him pay a fine and lets get over it. Out of all the sport scandals this does not even rank into it. Dog fighting, using steroids, etc... those are worth all the public scrutiny and the police investigating.
  • I think it's sad and I don't think his personal life should be splashed all over the media just because he's a famous golfer.  If he were a politician or something, one that espouses family values and all that, fine, but just a professional athlete, not necessary.

  • So he DID cheat.

I'm on the fence about the privacy issue.  When you make your living as a public figure, you do it knowing that your privacy will be an issue at some point. So part of me wants to say "suck it up and deal."   On the other hand, I do think some tabloid fact gathering tactics are over the line.

  • I cant say I care. I think if he had of just admitted this when it happened as opposed to letting it drag out in the media for days and days where everyone was digging and speculating, it wouldnt be such a big deal. Lets move on now, shall we. What are brad and angelina doing?
  • I think the story is salacious because of his perceived "good guy" image.  He's cheating on his wife combined with the car crash and the eye-raising rescue story has turned this into the story of the moment.

He deserves privacy, especially for his family's sake, but good luck getting it.
  • It isn't just 'his' privacy.  This is about his family's privacy.  Let them deal with it as they see fit.  I feel for his wife.  :(
  • I would say privacy for his wife, if nothing else. It's bad enough finding out that your significant other is cheating, let alone having the WHOLE WORLD talking about it. I feel for her.

ALSO: he's a fucking idiot for cheating on her, she's gorgeous. Men are stupid.
  • Personal sins should not require press releases and problems within a family shouldn't have to mean public confessions.

This is what I don't understand. If he really feels this way, why is he making a public statement?

Yeah I agree.  Have you seen the movie Funny People?  Seth Rogen says something similar to Adam Sandler and Adam Sandler says "yeah it's easy to say that when no one WANTS to sleep with you" and I thought that was so funny and so true.  Yeah Tiger's wife is beautiful, so are a lot of women that get cheated on.  But when rich good looking guys are presented with all of these opportunities, some of them are bound to fall for it.  There's a lot more that goes into cheating that just whether his wife is pretty or not.

  • What I don't get is how celebrities cheat thinking no one will find out. And if I were his wife, the marriage would be over.  Cheating is an unforgiveable sin for me.

Very true. I'm sure it goes a lot deeper than looks, or even a lot deeper than what the public will hear.

But my "men are stupid" statement stands. lol
  • I think he deserves his privacy as much as the next guy.

When you're a public figure, you definitely do have to exercise your discretion a little more than normal folks. If I went to my friend's house and jumped on her couch, probably no one would notice beyond my friend, but when Tom Cruise did it, the whole planet thought he was insane.

If I hit a tree with my car, no one would notice beyond my insurance company, and certainly no one would be asking questions about my fidelity. But because he's a public figure, suddenly he's been forced to make a statement about very personal details. And why - just because he happens to be a really great golfer?

Besides, I'd be much more affected by news that a friend was cheating on his wife, than by this. Tiger Woods is just another guy I don't know.

  • I just don't get how/why they had to drag out the crash story to get to his affair.

  • Chris Rock has a joke that really has a ring of truth to it. : "Men are only as faithful as their options."  Tiger has a lot of options.

Just because you're beautiful does not mean your husband will not cheat on you.  Halle Berry, Cindy Crawford, Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, Christie Brinkley, Sienna Miller, Uma Thurman, Elizabeth Hurley... I could go on.

It sounds like he wanted to clear up the accusations about physical abuse. Perhaps he thought that between making this statement and continued gossip, coming clean was the lesser of two evils.

  • Ring is right about clearing up the allegations about physical abuse.  If his injuries prove inconsistent with a crash his wife could face criminal charges.

  • Personally, I don't buy the story about there being no physical abuse.  She found out he was cheating and came after him with a golf club, it looks like.

  • Fi and I were once talking about guys who cheat.  I said I just don't understand whyguys cheat Fi told me that for some guys it is not that they do not love their girlfriend/fiance/spouse it is because it is the excitement of a new person.
  • I'm going with Rho's cousin. I'm on Team IdontgiveafuckaboutTigerWoodsorhisdoubledippingpeen.
  • This makes me so sad.

If I found out my husband was having an affair, I would hope there wouldn't be golf clubs around, either.

Now, don't get all domestic abuse awareness on me. Trust me. I'm aware. However, intense emotional reactions cause people to do things that they wouldn't normally do. I'm just not going to pretend to know how I would react in that situation and I'm not trying to justify any sort of domestic abuse. I would hope I know myself well enough to know that it wouldn't end in a golf clubbing, but truly. I don't know. WE don't know the facts. She may know more or less then we do.

I'm not judging. There aren't enough facts to judge. But I do respect the wishes of the family to keep it private and dealt with in the home. If that's how Elin wants to deal with it for her and her children, that should be respected.

  • He's a golfer. He's famous because he golfs. I don't give a crap if he's been hitting his ball on a different rough in his private life.
  • I think they deserve the right to privacy.  Mainly because the rest of the world just shouldn't care.  We've just created this society that loves a good trainwreck and breaks out the popcorn over the smallest, most ridiculous thing.

  • I feel bad for his family.  I don't feel bad for Tiger.  If you're running on this clean, family guy, good guy image like he is, you have to know that an indiscretion like a 31 month affair is going to get noticed eventually.  This isn't like a one night stand, where at least you could pull the "caught up in the moment, drunk, made a mistake, feel really bad" card.  31 months is a looooong time.  It's kinda like when Michael Phelps got busted smoking Mary Jane....if it was someone like Ludacris or TO or Colin Ferrell nobody would have blinked twice.  But Phelps was making his image as a good, All-American role model.  You've got to step real careful if you want to keep that image up.

  • If we stop caring about celebrity daliances, does that then start making it the norm for non-celebrity husbands, etc. to cheat?

If we stop ignoring it, are we then normalizing the behavior and then it's no longer a stigma to cheat on your spouse?
  • Poor wife and kids....

Personally, I am fine with any cheater to have their privacy invaded this way, but that's because I was cheated on and I hate cheaters with passion.

It really sucks for his family, because they didn't do anything wrong.  They are hurt and now everyone looks at their personal life and scrutinizes everything. That really sucks!

On a side note - the guys is married to a hot chick, has millions and perfectly cute kids, what the hell is he doing cheating with some skanks?  I guess it is true what the saying says:

"Show me the hottest woman in the world, and I will show you the man that is bored sleeping with her."

  • Plus, she's no longer a "hot chick" to him.   She's now his wife.

  • It shouldn't be public to begin with, bbycakes.  Particularly if it has nothing to do with what the person does as a career.  Like golf.  Quite frankly, his job is to put balls in holes.  Whether or not he does that when he's not on the golf course is none of my business.

If we're using celebrity as a moral compass, our society has gone so far sideways I'm not sure it's repairable.  Somehow prior to TMZ and the rest of the tabloids and the internet, people managed to live their lives to a moral code that was right for them.

I actually think that publicizing famous people doing stuff like this makes it seem more acceptable to cheat than less.

  • PS.  I think it's even worse when the tabloids publicize this kind of thing and the person who was cheated on does not leave.  What, exactly, is that showing the rest of the world?

    Yeah.
