stupid school district

They went today on a delay.  Then, they called off early.  I swear, it's just so that they don't have to make the day up.  BUT - they apparently had 11 accidents involving busses today, including one that had to be pulled out of a snowbank - THAT HAD STUDENTS ON IT for hours.

And, it's still snowing.  And they haven't called off for tomorrow.

JCPS supposedly drives the 3rd most miles for one school district per day in the US.  You'd think they'd be smarter.

Any stupid snow stories in your areas?

  • Nope.  We had off on Monday and I was surprised.  I don't even know if my district does delays.  I was so hoping to have off today, but we barely got anything.

It sucks for tlv not getting $, but I'm jealous that they have off because it's cold - it's supposed to be 9 here tonight.  NINE.  In central Arkansas.

  • i think we're only getting a few inches tonight.

Somewhat relieved as I have a NZ knottie coming in on Sunday for several days.

;sigh:  at least she gets a good snow show while she's here.  Last year I had to arrange that USAir landing on the Hudson River to entertain her!

  • Yeah, they're predicting a windchill of -12 while kids wait for the bus in the morning.  BRILLIANT.

  • As a kid, my school district was frequently the last one to close. I was the first and last kid on /off the bus. I dealt with this one a lot. Not cool.
  • LOL oot.  We usually get a couple decent storms per year, and they're just not being smart this time.  I'm thinking the news footage of busses spinning out sideways in parking lots might concern a few parents, but we'll see.

Our schools don't closse unless the windchill is colder than -40.  We were closed today and will be closed tomorrow.
  • Wow, anna.  I didn't think there was much that would close the schools up there!

Temps in the teens are foreign to the southerners.  I love it, but they're really freaking out.

  • Most New Yorkers know how to drive in snow.  I have a sister in D.C, and she panics with every snow storm

NOT because of her driving abilities but no one in DC knows how to drive in the snow.  When you grow up in Massachusetts, snow skidding is actually on the driver's test.  She's afraid of everyone else

They usually don't close for anything.  A lot of the rural kids have to walk a mile or so to busses and it's just a general hazard for any kid that would be forced to walk.
  • It started snowing about 2 hrs ago. There is a dusting outside, that already have delays for tomorrow.
    It's insane.
When I was in school,(6yrs ago) I had to walk in 2 feet of snow, no lie. Our school was the only one in the district open, and 90% of students walk to and from school. At least we got extra credit in most class's that only had maybe 5 kids tops.

  • The SUn, I know they don't bus kids in Perth, do they bus them in Brisbane?

School buses, yeah of course they do (what on earth do they use in Perth?! I'm surprised they don't have school buses!). I understood the 'bus' part with there being accidents on buses (school buses, I'm gathering), and I also figured it's something about calling school off/cancelling school for snow, but the part about them going on delay, and the JCPS driving so many miles... I just have no clue!

I just realised I re-wrote some of the same reply twice, thus this edit.. I blame beer!

How is life treating you anyway, dear?

  • JCPS is the school district and tehy have to bus kids further than any other district in the states.  They'll go on a delay to let the ice start to melt once the sun comes up.

Get this, in Perth, if you aren't in secondary school, you have to walk or be dropped of and picked up by a parent or a daycare.  No bussing for primary school!

  • When you say 'go on delay', you mean that they will start school later?

    Terminology differences!

and wth Perth? That is the most bizarre thing I've ever heard. I wonder what their rationale for that is?!

  • yes, school starts later.

I KNOW!  I was listening to a bunch of moms complain about not advancing in their jobs and then I heard them talkking about having to leave work at 3 to pick up the kids, so I questioned them abou tit (very politely of course) and thats when they told me about the no busses!  Lets guess why you can't advance at your job if you have to leave 2+ hours early every day!

  • Is it all schools in Perth? That is seriously odd.

And just a fyi to those mothers; had they not heard of after-school care?

    ;P

Lack of buses for kids to get to school = highly bizarre.

  • Not sure if it's all schools, maybe just public schools?

And I know, it was one of the more bizarre things I heard.

OOOH, I asked H and he also pronounces "solder" with the L.

I would never in my life have predicted that they'd pronounce it without the 'l' anywhere! I did just do some googling, though, and read that in some places in the states they pronounce it 'saw-der' and in other places it's pronounced with more of a long 'o' or an 'l' sound as it is here and apparently in the UK. I would say: Soul-duh (but not 'like DUH!', given that I would pronounce 'duh' differently to you would, too! I would say 'dur' in a way that is probably similar to how you'd say 'der', I think? This is an impossible conversation to have in text!). But yes, I have never heard it without the 'l'.

  • I grew up with the sawder version.
I also give H a ton of grief for pronouncing Filet as fill-it.  Just becuase the letters are there doesn't mean you have to pronounce them all ;-)

  • We have a lot of kids here who don't have appropriate clothes to be standing outside in sub-freezing temps, much less wind chills below zero.  They did finally cancel school for today, though.

Sun, the state mandates how many days you have to be in school each year, and so attending with a delayed start time (by one or two hours) but going home at regular time is an option that satisfies an official school day per the state's requirements.  They also have the option to end the school day early if that is necessary for safety.

  • Yeah, squirrly, my mom drives a bus for JCPS and she told me some horrible stories that came over the radio yesterday.  One bus lost their parking brake while sitting in traffic on a big hill.  She was in tears because she had to hold in the regular brake so the bus wouldn't slide and if she did slide at all, she could've slide right off the edge of a ravine.  They just take unneccessary risks here to get paid...its pretty awful.
  • Seriously, if I were a bus driver, I think I might refuse to drive in weather like that.  (I coach VB for one of the high schools, and they want me to get a CDL so I can drive the bus for my team.  I refuse.)

  • I'm so glad my district had a little more sense. They decided Wednesday at 3 PM to close early on Thursday, with just the impending threat of frozen precipitation. We ended up with about an inch, which doesn't sound like much, but for north GA, where plows, salt trucks, or sanding trucks don't exist, it isn't worth the potential liability of a bus crash.
  • When I was a kid my district almost never closed for snow.  I moved their when I was in 5th grade, and from them until I graduated I had a grand total of 5 snow days.  I drove in one morning, and it took me 45 minutes.  I lived 1.5 miles from the school.  That day we had a bomb threat and had to stand out in 3.5 feet of snow for an hour before they finally decided to drive the busses in and let us sit on them.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • There was a blizzard in my area the Monday before Thanksgiving in 2000. I was in college and home on break, but a shitton of school busses got stuck. It didn't start snowing until about noon, so people were already at school, and then it snowed over an inch an hour. About 2,000 city school kids ended up spending the night at emergency shelters, like city hall. And these were grade school kids (city of Buffalo doesn't bus high schoolers - they give them metro passes).

My best friend's dad was trying to pick up his other daughter at school and got stuck on the freeway, ran out of gas, and slept in his truck. This was not uncommon that day. People also ditched their cars and walked to hotels if they were in the city, so all the hotels were full. And then emergency vehicles couldn't get through the streets full of abandoned cars.
