Who walks on aisle runner?

Can I have my aisle runner layed out before the ceromony? I do want to monogram it, but wasn;t sure who would see it if only the bridal party was going to be walking on the runner. I was going to have the runner down with a rope to block guests from the center aisle.

Once wedding starts only grandparents, parents, and bridal party would walk on the runner.

Or can everyone walk on the runner?

Re: Who walks on aisle runner?

  • Also I just found a site that said to reserve the already rolled out runner for bridal party. Would this include the grandparents and MOB?
  • The point of the runner dates back to when people had horse crap on their shoes from riding horses to the church or coming in carriages.  The bride didn't want to get it on her dress so she put the runner down before she came down the aisle.

This is no longer an issue.

    Do what you want.
  • Ours was laid out before the ceremony and we had fabric draped across the end of the aisle to keep the guests from walking down it.  Guests were seated from the sides.  Just before the processional started with the seating of the Mothers, the Ushers removed the fabric and the Moms, BMs/GM, and me and my Step-Dad all walked on the aisle runner.

  • Whatever you want to do is fine.  There aren't any rules you need to follow on this one.  Just be sure that it's safe to walk on, especially for grandmothers and anyone who might not be too sure footed.
