Fill my Kindle!

So we're heading out on our vacation on Sunday, so I need some book recommendations.
Any favorite vacation reads?   I am not really a fan of romance/fantasy/sci-fi to narrow it down a bit :)

  • What are you a fan of?  I like murder/myster/action type books and I can give you a few great recommendations if you like those.  Do you?

  • LEE CHILD JACK REACHER BOOKS.

    Jus' sayin.

Or Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp books. SO GOOD.

Those are more like...mystery suspense, kickass books if you like that kind.

Sigh, I was all excited. I have 9 gigs worth of sci/fi-fantasy.
  • I just got my kindle yesterday! woot woot.

    I'm downloading
Are You there, Vodka? -Chelsea Handler  I loved Horizontal Life.

  • Yes, Dani, I do like those.  I also like auto/biographies.  And randomly, books about recent wars.

  • The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

I also recently read "Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil."  Older, but still great!

    I want to read that.

One of the books that I've read that has stuck with me is The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.  The movie was horrible and didn't do the book any justice.  I recommend that.

  • Okay, well I HIGHLY recommend Gone Baby Gone by Dennis Lehane and/or Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane.  Also, the Lee Childs Jack Reacher books are awesome.  Well I've only read one, Gone Tomorrow, but it kicked ass and I know Fische is also a huge fan.

I also HIGHLY recommend the Odd Thomas series (start with Odd Thomas) by Dean Koontz, love love love those.

Prep, Man of My Dreams and/or American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld

Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst (one of my all time favorites)

Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Edited for spelling because I type faster than I think.

  • I at one point had Are you there vodka - if I can find it dnb I can send it to you :)

  • Do you like historical fiction? Phillipa Gregory's stuff is pretty good-she wrote The Other Boylen Girl. The movie was pretty awful, but the book's great.
  • Thanks for all the suggestions!  I read pretty fast, so I'll download a bunch before we go.

  • If you're into classics, or modern classics, I love this MLA list of the best novels:

    http://www.modernlibrary.com/top-100/100-best-novels/

Added bonus: a lot of books that are older are no longer under copyright, and available for free on projectgutenberg.  For kindle, just download as a .txt file, plug in your kindle, add them to the right folder and then update your kindle from the screen. It took me 2 tries to get it right, but it totally worked.

I've also downloaded a few books I liked as a kid and want to reread - like the Secret Garden and the Anne of Green Gables series.

I also have the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy waiting on my kindle.

  • I  really enjoyed THE HELP by Kathryn Stockett

Currently I'm reading, HER DAUGHTER'S DREAM by Francie Rivers.  It's the second of 2 books.  The first  was HER MOTHER'S HOPE

I like Nelson Demille books.   They are long though.

BTW - I LOVE my Kindle.  I've read more books in the last 6 weeks than the last 6 months.

I only made it in the first chapter of Shutter Island.  I don't know why I couldn't stick with it...

I prefer books that rot my brain, like David Sedaris.

I have, and I love them too. Need I even describe how badly I want A Dance with Dragons to come out?
  • Ditto Andy on skipping the trip to knot.  I most likely will be left while you are gone and need the emotional support of my knotties.  (Is the guilt trip working?)

Also, I so want to try that red cheddar bread.  Hmmm, maybe I need to switch my flights at Christmas so I'm in Chicago for more than just an hour.

  • Ah, Mery, I haven't googled it in a while, but YAY at this:

On October 10, 2010, at the New York Comic Con, Spectra senior editor Anne Groell states that Martin has announced he has five chapters remaining, with sections of the chapters already completed. She also wants to get the manuscript completed by December.[

  • I've re-read a lot of classices because I've read them so foten that they're "fluff" for me.  But I've also been able to read some things I wouldn't have paid for, but wanted to read, like The Art or War or something like that.

I did download a bunch of the free classics that I never read.  I hope to actually read them :)

  • I just went to the Kindle store and looked at the top 100 free downloads and picked a bunch from there.  I'm generally too cheap to pay for books when I'm going to be reading a lot.  Like Amoro, there are a bunch of classics I've read enough that they're not heavy-duty reads anymore, and there are a few children's books I wanted to re-read.  There are also a few promotional free books that really are just junky fluff, too.
