How do you figure out the tip for catering?!

How do you calculate the tip in for catering, Is it how much the whole catering service is (were having a buffet) or is it just how much they are charging for the staff alone? Also how much of a % for a buffet and do you have to hand the tip to each waitstaff separetly or just to the caterer?

  • First, you should check to see if gratuity is included.  Most places include it, and you're good.  If it's included, ask how the money is split between waitstaff/bartenders/etc, so you know if you need to tip a little extra.

If gratuity is not included, you'd do it from the total, jus tlike you would at a restaurant, and 15-20% is standard.

  • Awesome thank you!
  • My catering company is laying a "service charge" of 30% on top of of the catering bill.  They also indicated that it is not a gratuity.  They said it's salaries for the staff.  Does this mean I don't have to tip?
