How do you figure out the tip for catering?!

How do you calculate the tip in for catering, Is it how much the whole catering service is (were having a buffet) or is it just how much they are charging for the staff alone? Also how much of a % for a buffet and do you have to hand the tip to each waitstaff separetly or just to the caterer?

First, you should check to see if gratuity is included.  Most places include it, and you're good.  If it's included, ask how the money is split between waitstaff/bartenders/etc, so you know if you need to tip a little extra.

If gratuity is not included, you'd do it from the total, jus tlike you would at a restaurant, and 15-20% is standard.

My catering company is laying a "service charge" of 30% on top of of the catering bill.  They also indicated that it is not a gratuity.  They said it's salaries for the staff.  Does this mean I don't have to tip?
