Pet Insurance

Do you have it?
Who's your provider?
Is it worth it?

Ox is really healthy, but bulldogs are prone to a lot of health problems. Just wondering if I should go ahead and get it, or just wait and see how he does.

Re: Pet Insurance

  • Yes, we use VPI.  It's worth it for us because the cost of the insurance plan which covers well visits is less than the well visits would be if we just paid cash.

No we dont but we really should. We just cant afford anything extra right now (which is stupid because if he gets sick, it will be something extra but whatever). Pugs are prone to a lot, but hes only 3 and hes incredibly healthy so im not overly concerned at the moment.

    I just knocked on wood.

A friend of mine has a walking disaster of a dog and her pet insurance has been totally worth it.
  • I posted a response but I think it got eaten.  I've been getting a lot of errors tonight.

Anyway, we have it and we use VPI.  It's worth it for us because the plan covers well visits and it's cheaper for the plan than the well visits would cost if we had to pay cash.

  • We had Petplan and were happy with it but let it lapse.

Didn't you say he was 8?  Most insurers won't insure an animal older than 4 or 5, in my experience.

  • We don't but next time we get a dog we will get it. Katie is already old so I would imagine the insurance wouldn't pay for what she needs. That being said, it would be nice to go "oh sure, give her hip surgery, insurance will pay".
  • Brie, the english bulldog I was originally interested in was 8. We decided that we didn't want one that old-I would've had a hard time adopting her, then having her die. Ox is going to be 2 in August.

I didnt know that brie, I will have to look into insurance within the next year then. I know my dog will need it when hes older - sinus issues, eye issues, joint issues, uuuugh.
  • Yeah, it's been awhile, but I remember there being age limits on animals for insurance that seemed pretty low.  GL!

  • yeah we have it through Banfield..(PetsMart)....totally worth it
  • I really wish we had been smart enough to get this for our dogs. I think it would have been totally worth it for our one dog. She had no health problems until she was a year old but then she developed the worst allergies I have ever seen. Her whole chest would break out and she just scratched herself all the time.

We hoped that the allergies were seasonal but it turns out she is allergic to a number of household inhalants (like dust!). We had to see the vet multiple times trying to find a good solution and now that we finally have it costs us about 60 bucks minimum a month for her allergy medication. Insurance would have been more then worth it.
  • I gotta say, after working for various Petsmarts, I will never my take my animals to Banfield. Way too pricey. My friend once was charged $3k for her cat to get spayed.
  • We have a pet plan through Banfield and it's totally worth it for me.
  • I have VPI for Lily. She is about 9 years old and it costs about $200 a year. Havent had to use it, but definitely worth the peace of mind.

  • When we first got Vortec I was looking into it but the vet told us it's generally not worth it. So when we got Turbo I didn't even let the thought cross my mind. All of these posts though I'm kind of thinking about looking into it again..
