Should we open gifts that are mailed/ sent to us ahead of the wedding? I kind of like to get on top of thank you notes, and don't want people wondering if we got their gift they sent six weeks ago at the wedding. But...
And is there a difference between opening a gift-wrapped package and one (that may or may not be gift wrapped) in a UPS box?
Finally, where does everyone fall on USING gifts (assuming you went ahead and opened them)?

Ditto pp. I can't tell you how many gifts we have received and my parents have received at their house. I open them, write a TY for the specific item and then set them aside. We are likely moving after the wedding, so I want to keep them in their original packaging.

You need to open them to make sure everything arrived in once piece (because there may be a time limit on when you can exchange it) and to thank the giver quickly.  Don't use it until after the wedding.
