Who traditionally gives speeches at a wedding?   Has anyone broken from tradition this way?  ie, having a family member other than the father of the bride give a speech or is this a huge no-no?  How much notice should I give them?

In the UK, fathers of the bride are generally speech givers, so it's not wholly unheard of.  Otherwise, I don't think it really matters who gives a speech, as long as it's not super long and boring and you don't have a ton of them

It varies but the minimum I've seen is the best man and MOH. 

We're doing the following and everyone is going to keep it short and snappy because we all hate how wedding speeches go:

Andy's dad
My dad
BM
MOH
Andy (and me)

Most of them are thanking people in some way or another.

Our BM and MOH gave them, and so did my mom.  She paid, so I wasn't about to tell her no. 

You shouldn't give people "notice," they should come to you if they want to give one.

Typically the speech arrangement will go along the lines of:

1 Father Of The Bride
2 Father Of The Groom
3 Groom (and / or possibly The Bride)
4 Maid of Honor
5 Best Man
